“Just to show him around, you know …”

It leaves my lips before I even have a chance to think. But, what did it matter? I’m single, with no strings attached to anyone, so my guilt is uncalled for.

I straighten my shoulders, willing my confidence to show.

And across from me, hazel eyes are burning fury-hot beneath the reading glasses. The flame begins to spread, reaching me from where I stand and spreading all over my skin.

This means nothing.

He doesn’t own me because I’m not a possession to own.

And the minute a chance presents itself, I’m going to remind him that we are nothing.

The fling has officially been flung.

Fourteen

Masen

All it took was one week before I caved like a goddamn pussy.

The moment she left my apartment the morning after, there was a void. I’d spent all night devouring her body as if she belonged to only me. Then, the moment she left, the air inside the apartment grew stifling hot like it took my ability to breathe with her.

This strange feeling evoked something within me, so I do what I always do when I’m overwhelmed and can’t decipher what’s going on.

I bury my head in work.

But this time—it wasn’t enough to distract me, especially when my parents were sitting inside my office wanting to talk.

“Between you and me,” Mom says as Dad is typing an email on his phone. “I think your brother has feelings for Addison.”

The name catches my attention enough for my gaze to life up a little too quickly.

I clear my throat. “I’m not surprised. They live together now.”

The jealousy bleeds through my veins, ready to destroy any chance of coming out of this mess I’ve created unscathed. My hands clench on the table, but as I raise my eyes, Dad is gazing at me with a sudden focus.

“I honestly never expected him to catch feelings. They've been around each other for their entire life,” Mom continues speaking.

Dad furrows his brows, still fixated on me. “Perhaps, he senses another lion sleeping in his den.”

“You might have a point. Cruz mentioned her going on some date tonight with her boss's nephew. He tried not to sound jealous, but a mother knows her son well.”

“A date?” I blurt out.

The second it leaves my mouth, Dad sits back with a smirk on his face. Fuck, the man is intuitive, or maybe I just gave too much away. I straighten my shoulders, switching my mannerisms, so no one mentions anything about my behavior.

“Yes, and so she should date. Addison is a beautiful and smart woman. At the ball the other night, so many men asked me about her. I almost felt terrible for all the attention she got.”

“Lex and Charlie sure know how to make beautiful girls,” Dad praises while cocking his head at me. “Addison is quite the catch. Beautiful and single. Well, maybe not after tonight if this man knows what’s good for him.”

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? I do my best to control my anger, desperate to text her and ask the truth. What the fuck would I even say? She’s mine, and no one else can go near her?

Perfect.

The devil is sitting on my shoulder, handing me a bourbon and telling me he’ll take care of it. My temper flares and the two people who know me too well are watching me quietly.

“Is everything okay, Masen?” Mom asks, quickly glancing at Dad.
