“So, upstairs, Addison didn’t look too pleased to see you.”

He lets out a long-winded sigh. “She’s probably not.”

“Did something happen between you two?”

Cruz doesn’t respond straight away, drinking the whisky in one go and ordering another. The bartender warns him to slow down, to which Cruz argues back that he’ll get the fucker fired.

“This needs to stay between us …” he warns me. My jaw clenches not liking the sound of this. “Coach thinks I’ve got a high chance of being drafted to an NFL team.”

I draw back, surprised it’s not what I think. “You’ve worked hard. So, I’m not understanding the problem?”

“I told Addison I don’t want to leave because …” he trails off, then strains, “I told her I’m in love with her.”

My brother’s admission hit’s me like a thousand daggers to the chest. Here he is, professing his love to her. I don’t even have the courage to admit how I feel despite how much we’ve fucked over the last few weeks.

I’m unsure what to say, but then it comes to mind.

“What did Addison say?”

“She freaked out, of course. I mean, it fucking hurt you know. I thought there was something between us despite her being distant of late,” Cruz admits with a tightened voice. “But there’s more. Something I’m not proud of …”

The pounding inside my ears is not from the loud music, but the beat of my heart. My rushed breathing causes my throat to dry out at the same time my hands clench, and unclench, waiting for the storm to hit.

“What happened?” I grit through my teeth.

“She was sleeping, and I …”

“You what?”

“I went to her bedroom,” he continues with a shaky voice, “I’m not proud, okay? I’d been drinking and—”

“What did you do?”

“I forced myself on her,” he sputters, then rushes. “It was just a kiss, but I should have listened when she tried to tell me to stop.”

Beneath my clothing, a rush of heat spreads all over my skin. The adrenaline runs through my veins as my lips pull back baring my teeth.

Slowly, my hand moves toward my chest with my fist clenched. As my nostrils flare, I swiftly turn around to face the man who inflicted all this rage and pain.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Cruz questions, pulling back. “I said it was a mistake and I’m not proud of what I—”

My fist connects with his face before he finishes his sentence. The pain ricochets through my hand, causing me to clench tighter. There’s a commotion around us as Cruz tries to retaliate, managing to swipe the corner of my jaw.

His bloodied face is staring at me, ready to strike again until arms pull me back. They belong to Will, as Austin holds back Cruz.

Addison runs toward us, standing in the middle. Her pained eyes dart back-and-forth, then, they fixate only on me.

“Addison, don’t—"

“We’re over,” she threatens in a cold voice. “I never want to see you again.”

“This is my fault?” I argue back, my blood pumping like an animal defending his kingdom from the wild. “You keep fucking choosing him! I was never your first choice. I was convenient for sex and that’s it.”

“Yeah,” she grits with a cold stare. “And without sex, we are nothing. Goodbye, Masen.”

And just like that, our fate is sealed.

My brother won, just like I predicted all along.
