“That’s the easy part. We make him jealous.”

I cock my brow at him. “How?”

“Leave that up to me. We’re going out tonight.”

I can’t shake the thoughts running through my mind as I make my way back to the apartment with Lanah close behind. After spending the entire day just sitting there in silence watching me and occasionally glancing out of the window, I wonder if she ever talks at all. Sure enough, just like this morning, we walk the three blocks back to the apartment in complete silence.

I’m playing a dangerous game here. A game for which I don’t know the rules or the outcome. I hope I don’t overplay my hand.

Chapter 12

Callie

“Where are we going?” I ask Collin while fidgeting with the bangle bracelet hanging from my wrist.

“Somewhere you can show off that smoking dress.”

I feel the blush creep into my face, fighting the self-consciousness turning in the pit of my stomach. I don’t know why I even packed it in the first place. The tight black halter dress rides way too high on my thighs for my taste but if I’m going to turn Dominic’s head, I need to pull out all the stops. Too bad he wasn’t even home to see me leave.

I let my frustrations out with a heavy sigh, “What does that matter? Dominic didn’t get to see me in it.”

“So, plan A failed. There’s always plan B.” Collin nudges me, causing me to stumble slightly in these ridiculous high heels. Neither of us have a car, so I should have anticipated having to walk.

“And what is Plan B?” I ask.

“Let him see you come home in it.” He winks, “Besides, we need to celebrate. You were just handed your dream on a silver key ring. Not everyone can be so lucky.”

“Our dream.” I nudge him back, “this isn’t exactly the way I pictured it though.”

From behind us, Lanah lets out a huff. I snap my head back and catch the disapproving expression plastered across her face.

“What? He can’t really expect me to sit in that apartment waiting on him. He’s never home.” I blurt out, a bit too confrontational.

“It’s not for me to say what he expects.” Lanah responds. She’s right it’s not her place, yet I’m suddenly second guessing this plan.

“We’re here.” Collin points to the building bathed in a rich red paint with deep purple lights up ahead. “A friend told me this is the hottest club in town. Stop fretting and have some fun. We’re young, we’re hot and on the prowl.” Collin teases.

“You’re on the prowl. I’m married now, remember?” I roll my eyes, letting my attention fall to the heavy wedding ring on my finger. I’m so twisted inside and out about this so-called marriage; I don’t know what I feel or want anymore.

“Then be my wingman. Just loosen up. You deserve to have some fun.”

Lanah clears her throat, “This is where you plan to celebrate?”

“Why not? Is something wrong with this place?” I can’t deny that Collin is right, I deserve to have some fun. Just because Dominic put a ring on my finger doesn’t give him the right to change who I am.

“No,” I think I catch a small smile tugging at the corner of Lanah’s lips and then it’s gone. “Let’s go in.”

The vibration of the music pumping through the sound system elevates my mood the instant I feel it. It’s the perfect place to get lost in the crowd, work up a sweat and let my mind take a break from the chaos of the past few days. Collin opens a tab at the bar and we down the first round of shots like water. Then we order mojitos and take to the dance floor.

Like a puppet on a string, my arms and legs move to the beat as Collin, and I dance to the hypnotic music. Lanah has perched herself at a high-top table along the edge sipping on a bottle of water. Close enough to watch me with that intense scowl of hers but too far away to hear me.

“What do you think of my personal babysitter over there?” I yell over the loud music.

“She’s a fun one, isn’t she?”

I throw my head back and laugh, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to take orders from her or the other way around. This is all too much.”
