Each guest wore a different style of Halloween attire, him included. The pin-on skeleton holding the black rose wasn’t his style, but when Isa wanted something, Doc made it happen. He sighed, leaning against the door by the kitchen. Kita wasn’t like that. If she wanted something, she’d do it herself.

“You did a decent job up there.”

He glanced to his right and met Kita’s amber eyes. “Thanks. It’s difficult to stay focused. I get so bored.”

She laughed. “Not replaying our tryst, were you?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” A flush of red crept over her cheeks, casting her in ideal color. “But no, I wasn’t. Not the whole time.”

“Just partly?”

“Hey, I’m a guy. I have needs.”

Kita gave him a disbelieving glance. “We had sex a few hours ago.”

He cocked his head. “You say that like I don’t want it every two minutes.”

“Do you?”

“What?”

“Want sex every two minutes?”

Kevlar lightly kissed her, not giving a damn that her red lipstick smeared on him. “Only with you.”

Another blush, this one deeper and rivaling her lipstick. “You’re cheesy as hell.”

“Your point?”

Kita looped her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder. “I like it, is all. It’s nice to simply be myself with somebody. I haven’t done that in quite a few years.”

“Working undercover can take it out of you.” He kissed the top of her head, the scent of jasmine filling his nose. The same flowers as fifteen years ago sent his mind to the times they’d made love.

“So can special ops.”

She gazed up at him, understanding in her eyes. She knew the struggles of keeping everything under control. Knew how difficult it was to hold everything in and never let the enemy see weakness.

“You wanna dance?” He held out his hand, and she placed hers inside it. The fit was perfect.

“I suppose, but I should warn you, I’m fabulous.”

He twirled her. “I remember.”

They joined the rest of the guests, swaying to the Halloween-themed dance party. He’d never liked the spooky holiday.Until tonight.

Flashes of time in the Middle East deserts agitated Kevlar out of deep sleep. He sat up and adjusted to the darkness. Heart throbbing at the memories the dreams brought, he tried to steady his breathing. The breathing techniques from the Army doctor helped bring him back to the present.

The mountain lodge. The wedding. He inhaled again and exhaled slowly.Kita.His eyes dipped to the woman on the other side of the bed. She faced him; her lips parted slightly. He was safe. Well, as safe as he could be without losing his heart to this woman once more.

Kevlar got out of bed, careful not to jostle Kita. Moving to the window, he looked out into the night. No hint of sunshine met his perusal. Security lights glowed, but otherwise it appeared black on the horizon.

He opened the window and leaned his torso out, inhaling the sweet scent of pine trees and the icy chill. Cradling his head, he despised how his time overseas still wreaked havoc in his mind. He’d never truly leave the Middle East. Not with the memories surfacing nearly every time he closed his eyes.

“Hey, you okay?”

Kita’s arm around his waist startled him, and he hit his head on the window frame. Rubbing the back of his head, he eased away from the window and looked over at her. Not a scrap of clothing to be seen, hair covering her breasts and curling slightly on the ends. Her amber-colored eyes almost glowed in the room, searching his face anxiously.
