Kevlar wondered the same. Hawk all but disappeared two days ago. He didn’t realize the absence until right then.

“Out and about,” Hawk replied, skirting the question and walking to the pool table. “I have next winner.”

Watching him, Kevlar recognized sadness rimming Hawk’s usual smile. He understood then where he’d gone.Mandi’s funeral. He gritted his teeth, willing himself to refrain from asking about Kita and if she was there too. He grabbed another drink, the night growing darker by the moment.

Hours later, Rubble had to help him down the hall. He staggered drunkenly, both men singing an Irish tune loudly. Kevlar didn’t give a shit when Isa scowled and told them to shut it. Neither did Rubble, who merely laughed and kept walking down the hall.

“Okay, try to throw up in the trash can,” Rubble said, clapping a hand on Kevlar’s back. “I ain’t cleaning up after you.”

Kevlar saluted his oldest friend in the club and opened the bedroom door. It took a few seconds for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. Once they did, he blinked, then rubbed his eyes. No matter what he did, she was still there. Kita was back.

Chapter Forty-One

Nikita

“Kita?”

She flicked on the recently fixed lamp beside the bed. The shade was taped together, a friendly reminder of how they’d busted it during sex. She planned on making a grand appearance, but after seeing Kevlar drunk off his ass, she opted for a more private reunion.

“Yeah, it’s me.”

He laughed and clumsily kicked off his boots. “Nah, I’m dreaming.”

She watched him strip. The act seemingly difficult given his healing wound and tipsy state, but she didn’t move to help him. The flight into Denver and subsequent drive through the snow wore her out. All she wanted to do was fall in his arms and go to sleep. Seeing him with his brothers, she’d accepted it wouldn’t happen. At least not yet.

“You’re not, but you probably should go to bed.” She muted a giggle when he tripped over his feet and flopped onto the bed.

He let out a pained grunt and rolled over. Other than his green boxers, he was completely undressed. Crawling over, she pressed a kiss to his arm. It was so warm beneath her mouth, a vast difference to the bitter cold outside. It wasn’t even Christmas, but Snowshoe lived up to its name with frigid temperatures.

“Fuck, you’re really here, aren’t you?”

She nodded against him, lips moving along his tattoos.

“How long?”

Propping up her head on her fist, she tried to catch his gaze. He wouldn’t give up his beautiful brown eyes to her. She didn’t blame him. After all, she’d left without a word. If the tables were reversed, she’d be wary too.

“Indefinitely.”

“What?” He craned his neck to meet her face now, gaze searching her. “What did you say? I’m a little wasted and want to make sure I’m not making this all up.”

“You know, you were drunk when we met.” She smiled reminiscently. It was a cliché, but she met the love of her life at a party beside a keg of cheap beer.

“Yeah, I remember. You wore this short blue mini skirt. Every guy in the place was drooling over you.” He cupped the side of her face. “And you wanted me. Nobody else.”

“I still do, Kevlar.” She nibbled on the top of his lip. “I chose you then and I choose you now.”

“You sure? Because I hear those East Coast MCs are— “

Her lips silenced the rest of his snarky reply. He quickly overtook the embrace, his tongue invading her mouth. The taste of whiskey mixed with cigarettes was purely Kevlar.

“I love you, Kita.” He broke free to say, thumb running across her bottom lip. His eyes shone in the dim lighting. “I know you said you never wanted to be part of an MC again, but I was kind of hoping you’d change your mind.”

“I love you too, Kevlar.” She grabbed his chin and pulled him to her mouth. “And don’t you dare propose to me when you’re drunk.”

He smirked. “It’d complete the circle, baby. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

She pressed him into the mattress and carefully straddled him. “I think I’d rather keep traveling the circle.” She kissed down his neck. “That okay with you?”
