“Nothing’s going on.”

“I heard you kissed.”

Delphi snapped her eyes from the beer label to the other woman. “Who told you that?”

“Other than half the garage?” Dolly’s eyes sparkled. “Brewer.”

A new reason to drink came over her. She tipped back the bottle until it was empty. If she was going to get through the evening, she’d need to stabilize her nerves a bit. “You two seem close.”

“Yeah, I’d say we’re close.”

“That’s really cool. I’m an only child.” She placed the bottle on the coffee table. “But not for my parents’ lack of trying.”

“Hey, they got lucky once. Can’t hate them for trying to give you a sibling.”

Delphi hadn’t thought of that in years. Not since she was a kid and complaining she had no one to play with. It suddenly made sense. “My dad couldn’t have kids.”

Dolly arched her brow. “Um, okay?”

“Shit, I didn’t mean to say that out loud.” She watched the logs burn. “I just realized. No wonder they tried so hard. They wanted someone who wasn’t….” She left off there, unable to finish the thought.

“Wasn’t what?”

“A mistake.”

Dolly opened her mouth to respond, but Brewer chose that moment to step into the room. “Dinner’s on. If you don’t want Hawk eating it all, you better get in there,” he said loud enough for everyone to hear.

Bikers and nymphs alike funneled down the hallways toward the dining area and kitchen.

“Come on. He wasn’t joking about Hawk.” Dolly stood up. “That man can put more food away than a dozen teenagers.”

Delphi waited until Dolly disappeared into the throng of foodies before standing up herself. The weight of their conversation should’ve been light, but it turned heavy in the beat of her heart.

“Everything okay?” Brewer asked, coming up behind her. “Dolly didn’t say anything to upset you, did she? My sister is very blunt. She didn’t mean it. Probably.”

Placing a hand on his forearm, she shook her head. “No, it wasn’t her. She was great. Honestly.”

“Then what’s wrong?” He covered her hand with his. “I can see it in your eyes, Delphi. Talk to me.”

“I’m just understanding more about my family, that’s all.”

“Being here did that?”

“Yeah. I don’t know why.” She offered him a look she hoped would make him stop staring at her like she was Pandora’s box simply waiting to be opened. “I’m fine. Seriously. Unpacking family history is a bitch sometimes.”

He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her gently. “I may not understand completely, but I do get it, Delphi.”

She snuggled deeper into his chest. The scent of firewood clung to his shirt. “What do you mean?”

“Well, Dolly and I are trying to find out what happened to our parents a few years back.”

“When they died?”

“Yeah. We think somebody in Macha killed them.”

Delphi dropped her hold and took a step back. “Who do you think it was?”

Brewer ran his fingers through his hair, chewing his bottom lip. Finally, he met her gaze and stole her breath. “Shovelhead.”
