Kevlar punched him in the stomach good-naturedly. “What the hell? I try to calm you down, and you’re giving me shit.”

Brewer grinned. “It’s kind of what I do.”

Not seeing Rubble approach, Brewer suddenly found himself in a tight headlock. “What was that you were saying, Brewsky? How awesome Kev and I are?”

He tapped on the big man’s forearm. “Yeah, that must’ve been it.” Rubble dropped his hold, and Brewer stumbled away. “Asshole.”

Rubble shrugged. “Never said I wasn’t one.” He nodded at Brewer. “Your girl heard from Dolly’s contact yet?”

“Yeah.” Brewer fixed his hooded sweatshirt under his leather cut. “It doesn’t feel right.”

“Never does, brother.” Rubble’s mismatched eyes turned serious. “But we’ll be ready. One of the nymphs offered to drop by the cantina in case Shovelhead stops by. She’ll keep us updated. I’m surprised Dolly didn’t tell you already.”

“Dolly’s mind is on other things lately,” he said under his breath. “I’m glad to hear we have a contingency plan in place.”

“We’ll get the bastard.” Rubble exchanged a glance with Kevlar. “Nikita’s keeping the FBI on his trail, so he’ll pop his ugly head out one of these days.”

“As long as we get there before the FBI, we’re golden,” Kevlar added. “Kita can only do so much, which is why it’s important we catch him first. The Feds want Shovelhead for multiple cases.”

This kept Brewer homed in on the conversation. “Other than the ones we know about?”

Kevlar nodded. “Yep. The Twelve Brothers, Diablos, and Greenback Cutthroats seem to be the tip of the MC iceberg for this guy.”

“Too bad he never stepped into the ring with me.” Rubble cracked his knuckles, a menacing gleam in his eyes.

“He’s too old to go a single round with you,” Kevlar reminded him. “The club will have their vengeance.” He swiveled to Brewer. “And so will you.”

“But what about Delphi?” Brewer suddenly needed another hit of nicotine. He fished his lighter out of his back pocket and lit a fresh cigarette. “If Shovelhead is actually her dad like she thinks, we can’t just off him.”

Rubble kicked at the slush on the sidewalk. “This is a club matter, Brewer. If Delphi wants to meet her dad, she’d better do it before Macha gets ahold of him.”

He’d been in club life long enough to know the veracity of Rubble’s words. What Shovelhead did was beyond forgivable. And that’s only part of his sins.

Resting the cigarette between his lips, he nodded. Discovering more about Shovelhead wouldn’t happen without catching the man. Having Nikita on Macha’s team helped. They’d get their answers or at least try before handing the traitor over to the FBI.

“You gonna be able to handle this?” Kevlar asked. “I know it was difficult for Kita.”

“Her situation was a bit different,” Rubble reminded him. “She knew her dad.”

“Okay, yes, but she also had to deal with the shit she found out later.” Kevlar offered him an encouraging smile. “How do you think Delphi will handle things?”

“Not sure. My guess is, it’ll depend on the circumstances of her conception.”

Rubble’s left brow cocked. “You mean….”

“It’s one of the scenarios Delphi’s tossed around since finding out.”

Kevlar coughed. “Shit.”

“Either way, I think Delphi just wants answers. We all do. If Shovelhead will readily give them up, things will go much smoother for everyone.”

Both men hummed their agreement. Macha wasn’t about to let Shovelhead ride away into the sunset. The man had done it more than once before.

Brewer pulled his sunglasses out of his pocket and put them on. It was a perfect day for a ride around town.Maybe I can convince Delphi to come too.

“Yo, Kevlar, your phone’s been ringing off the hook in here,” one of the prospects called from the garage.

Kevlar patted his pockets. “Shit, I really need to remember that thing. See you boys later.”
