“I’ve betrayed my closest friends, deceived my brothers and sisters and committed the worst sins, all for money.”

“Then it’s true.”

“What is?”

“That you killed two Macha bikers.”

He smiled sadly. “I’ve done worse than that, if you’d believe it. I deserve every and any punishment that’s heading my way.”

Delphi felt Brewer’s presence before he rested a hand on her shoulder.

“Then I guess I don’t feel bad about what’s going to happen next,” she said, standing up. “I’m sorry it had to be this way, Shovelhead.”

Taking her hands in his, Shovelhead squeezed them twice. “But you should know, if I’m not him, your real daddy’s out there. If I were you, I’d stop looking for him. No good can come of it. If your momma didn’t tell you, there was a reason.”

Rubble and Hawk each grabbed one of Shovelhead’s arms while Snoopy took his side piece.

“I’d say it’s good to see you again, boys, but it’s not.” Shovelhead stood up but didn’t take his gaze from Delphi. “If I’m not back at my clubhouse by midnight, they’ll send someone for me. And if they think you’re my daughter, you’ll be the first person they take.”

Rubble and Hawk manhandled him in the opposite direction. “Mark my words,” he called before the group of bikers escorted him from the town center.

Delphi watched him go, unable to look away until he was completely out of sight. Brewer stayed by her side. He hadn’t touched her anywhere but her shoulder, and she found she desperately needed him to.

Standing up, she turned to face him, tears flowing down her cheeks. “Did you know about my mom?”

“No.” He shook his head. “If I did, I would’ve said something.”

“I don’t know if I can believe him.”

She moved closer and rested her forehead on his chest. Brewer wrapped his arms around her, bringing her against him fully.

“If you want to find out, we can, Delphi.” He tilted up her chin, his blue eyes lined with concern. “But if you don’t, that’s okay too.”

She thought it over for the tenth time since Shovelhead’s bombshell. “I can’t. I need to know who my biological dad is even if I won’t like the answer.”

He brushed a chaste kiss on her forehead. “Then I’ll help in any way I can, and so will Macha.”

“Thank you.” She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his sweatshirt that smelled of motorcycle oil and cedar. “Is the picnic over?”

Brewer’s right hand smoothed her hair. “It is for you.”

She stepped back. “But what about Jupiter and Yasmina? They need my help.”

Turning her to face the tent, he chuckled. “I think between the nymphs and prospects who stepped in, they more than have it covered.” He grabbed her hand. “C’mon, sweet cheeks. We’re off to wherever you want. Home? The clubhouse? Your choice.”

Delphi wiped the tears from her cheeks. She desired an answer to the question that had burned in her mind over the last year. Brewer offered her a boyish grin. But she also wanted to escape from the havoc the recent meeting had caused. Only Brewer could offer such an escape.

“Let’s go to the clubhouse.” She pressed her hand against his lips to keep him from replying. “But only so we’re there in case I change my mind about wanting to talk to Shovelhead after we’re done in your room.”

Brewer lifted his brows. “And what do you think is going to happen in my room, young lady?”

She rose up and kissed him. “Whatever we want.”

He cradled her face, deepening the kiss. “Needing a distraction?”

“Something like that.”

“Well, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure you get it.” He picked her up off the ground, and she giggled when he swatted her ass. “But afterward, I want to hear every damn word he said to you.”
