“Deal.”

Delphi laughed louder when he practically skipped toward his motorcycle. She may not have the truth, but she had something better.Someonebetter. A man who loved her.

CHAPTER35

BREWER

Watchingthe rhythmic rise and fall of Delphi’s chest made Brewer’s tighten in response. He reached over and pushed the few strands of hair out her face, holding his breath when she stirred.

When they reached the clubhouse, she’d poured her heart out. It killed him to hear Shovelhead’s words regurgitated like that. He couldn’t be mad at her for needing the truth.Or at least the truth as Shovelhead sees it.

Brewer carefully climbed out of the bed and turned to see Delphi move slightly. The sheet fell away, exposing the curve of her breast. The desire to softly kiss it until she woke overwhelmed him. He shook his head. She needed to rest, and he needed to find out what his brothers had done with Shovelhead.

Slipping on his clothes, he silently promised to make it up to her. He wasn’t sure how, but he’d find a way. He pulled on his cut, the scent of leather invading his nostrils. It was one he’d grown up craving. Being part of Macha was all he’d ever dreamt of.

Delphi let out a small snore and his stomach dropped. He walked over to the bed, pulse pounding in his eardrums. But now all he wanted was Delphi. He gently ran his thumb along her soft skin. All he craved was Delphi. She was his new dream. Macha may be the club’s goddess, but Delphi was his.

* * *

The basementof Macha’s lodge had never looked so damning. What most visitors didn’t know was that the secret door hidden at the very back of the liquor storage led to another more menacing room. The lighting was dingy at best, but none of Macha’s patches seemed to mind. Their focus was on the man strapped to the metal chair in the center of the fortified room. Macha didn’t fuck around with traitors. They had a specific location to deal with them.

Brewer cautiously glanced around at his brothers. Not one looked happy to be there. Hell, he’d rather be cozied up with Delphi than have the stench of stale sweat linger in his nostrils. This part wasn’t what he liked about club life. But we have no other choice. He’s a traitor.

Reaper took a step forward, a large leather-clad book in his hands. His tiny glasses looked out of place on his nose, almost as if he should be holed up in a library instead of staring at a man they all used to love.

“Shovelhead, you’re accused of sabotaging Macha and her members. How do you plead?”

Shovelhead spit blood mixed with saliva on the floor in response to Reaper’s question. He managed a slight grin, his lower lip cracking from having been repeatedly punched. “You’re not the law. Hand me over to them, and I’ll take my chances.”

A rumble of discourse spread through the tight-knit group of men, but none moved. They stayed in their spots despite the murder written on their faces. Brewer had only seen one other judgment day before now. No one betrayed Macha.

Reaper met Brewer’s eyes and nodded once. Tugging on Dolly’s arm, Brewer stepped toward Shovelhead. They weren’t the only two who had beef with the man in question, but they’d lost the most.

Dolly reared back and punched Shovelhead in the gut before anyone could react. He doubled over, and she yanked on his hair until he met her gaze. “Did you kill my parents?”

“And what if I did?” he snarled.

Dolly’s blue eyes flashed with fury. She tightened her grip until Shovelhead winced with pain. “Speak the truth, motherfucker. You aren’t getting out of this room intact until you do.”

Brewer had to hand it to his little sister. She was venom and acid when she got going. It was a wonder she’d never demanded the club change its rules so she could patch. She’d be one hell of a member.

“Look, I did some bad shit, but I did it on my own. Nobody else from this club was involved.” Shovelhead’s eyes swiveled to the president. “I worked with other clubs and set up Macha to take the blame for the trafficking shit with the Cutthroats and Diablos. I took some cash off the top whenever I got the chance. I’m not the devil here. I’m just a product of my environment.”

Not able to hold back his rage any longer, Brewer’s fist connected with Shovelhead’s nose. Blood sprayed the air, droplets landing on Brewer’s vest. “Did you kill our parents?” He gripped the front of Shovelhead’s bloodstained shirt. “I won’t ask you again.”

A glimmer of fear crossed the other man’s dark eyes. “Yes. Yes, I killed your ma and pa. They kept sticking their noses in where they didn’t belong. They would’ve exposed my allegiance to the Greenback Cutthroats and Diablos. If I hadn’t, someone else would’ve. Better to end it quick than make them suffer. Diablos wanted a slow death. I was kind to put them out like I did.”

The room went silent, then erupted into a flurry of curses and calls for vengeance. Brewer dropped his hold on Shovelhead and watched as Dolly screamed and pommeled her fists into the man. After all this time, the truth was out in the open. The weight of their deaths lessened on his shoulders. Where he expected a need for retaliation, his brain could only process grief. Tears dripped down his cheeks and into his beard. He didn’t try to hide them. He’d waited so long to hear it from the murderer’s lips that now all he wanted to do was leave. Leave the pain behind him and never look back.

“Everybody, shut it!” Rubble growled, prying Dolly off Shovelhead’s bloody body.

Dolly opened her mouth to argue, but one glare from Rubble made her stop. “We aren’t done with him yet,” she stated instead.

Rubble shook his head. “No, you’re not, but neither am I. There are still some questions Macha needs answers to. Shovelhead will pay for his betrayal.” His mismatched eyes swept over the room. “But we won’t become murderers in the process.”

The bikers started talking all at once again. Snoopy called for the ultimate punishment while Hawk wanted to see Shovelhead eat the burned patch. Three months ago, Brewer would’ve joined them. But now, he wasn’t sure what to feel. He didn’t know how it was possible. One thing was certain: he had to find the answer to Delphi’s paternity.

Finding Doc at the other end of the room, Brewer lowered his voice. “Think you can get a DNA swab from this guy?”
