“Need to talk to you in private,” he said, and then walked us out to the hallway, and then took a corridor to the right, and then right again and we found ourselves in a dead end, with cartons of beer stacked under a stairwell, private from the main thoroughfare.

Harry closed the distance between us, backing me up against the wall and bracing his arms either side of my head. My bag fell from my shoulder to the floor.

“Are we here to talk?” I asked, pushing up on my toes to get closer to his lips “Or something else?”

“Yes, talk.” He frowned, looking at my mouth.

“Then why did you choose the make-out cupboard of the pub?”

Harry blinked. “The make-out—”

A couple barrelled into our space and after giggles and many apologies, backtracked outside.

“This storage space is infamous as the make-out cupboard, or even hook up cupboard.”

I ducked under his arm and took a tie of an apron hanging from a nail behind him and tied it to another small nail across the space, effectively blocking us from future interruptions.

“That’s the universal code for ‘do not disturb’.”

“Right.” Harry sucked on his bottom lip. “What did Doug want?”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I didn’t like the way he looked at you,” he grumped.

“Makes two of us. But I handled it.” I glared, clearly not impressed with his train of thought.

Harry cleared his throat. “Doug talked to me about you at footy training weeks ago.”

“Hewhat?”

“He was sussing me out about my interest in you and ...” He paused. “I made sure he knew I didn’t care for his opinion on the topic.”

I frowned, sucking on my lips.

“I know we haven’t talked about what this is between us but … am I competing against him for you?”

“No! He was …” I shook my head, stunned. “I need to tell you he was my first.”

“First?” Harry parroted back, and then his eyebrows shot up. “Oh, likefirst?”

“Yes, he took my virginity ten years ago.” I groaned. “I was an idiot. Amanda and I, well, we were always competing with each other. Most of the time, I didn’t care and just did my own thing but she’d been riding my arse this one time and I’d found out she had a huge crush on Doug. Every girl had a crush on Doug, mind you. He was the It Guy; on the footy team, he worked out, was a junior volunteer for the fire brigade. He flirted with me, Amanda, Sam, anyone who had tits. He was also a douchebag back then, even though I didn’t see it at the time, and he hasn’t changed a bit.

“Anyway, he’d been flirting at a bonfire barbeque we hosted at our farm with families of the fire brigade but really, everyone in Ballydoon came. I deliberately made out with Doug where Amanda would see us. I wanted to piss her off. Amanda declared war that night, so I escalated it by offering to Doug to stamp my V card. And he did.”

I sighed, slumping back against the wall.

“Did he …” Harry grunted, stretching out his fingers. His hand had curled into a fist. “Did he hurt you?”

“What? No! Not at all. Losing my virginity was over in two minutes, to be honest. I didn’t even, you know, come. The worst part of it all was Dad found out. He’d heard Doug boasting later. Dad was so disappointed in me. Amanda found out too and she was so mad. But then the bushfire happened a week later. And everything changed. I never reconciled with Amanda. We’ve always been distant since. And Doug’s shitty sex skills faded into history, until tonight. But Ryan is fierce around any guy who tries to make a move, after my spectacular blunder with Doug.”

I glanced at Harry, willing him to see the effect he had on me, how much I wanted him. “Until you, I didn’t know sex could be good. You’re the first man who has brought me to orgasm.”

“How many men have you slept with?” Harry flinched at his question; his face aghast. “Stacey, I’m sorry. I—”

“Two.”

“When you told me at the track that it had been several years since you’d had sex …” He blinked, realisation setting in. “Am I the second man you’ve slept with?”
