I simply nodded.

“Sam and I made a pact called Operation End My Sex Drought when I was on leave from work. I met you on the second last night of my break.”

Harry reached for my hand and brought it up to his lips. “I’m so glad I met the incredibly sexy, beautiful, smart Firebird instead of Phil.”

“There’s nothing between me and Doug. I swear it.”

“I believe you,” Harry whispered, as he kissed my wrist.

“People were looking at us tonight. Talking about us.” I added, my voice coming out as a moan as his mouth travelled higher up my arm.

“Are you worried about people knowing we are sleeping together?”

“Yes. No!” I swallowed hard. “I mean, it’s just everyone in this town knows each other’s business. And everyone has an opinion. I want you, Harry. I do. It’s just hard in a small town to have a truly private life.

“Ryan works here Friday and Saturday nights when I am typically free to see you. And everyone talks.” I exhaled loudly. “There was even a post on the Ballydoon Community Page speculating about us. Ryan deleted it, but I just don’t want the noise of the small town busybodies to get in the way of us, this, what we are doing.”

“I had no idea this had been happening,” he said. “Every mother and grandmother who has come through the practice has tried to set me up with their daughters or nieces. It’s full on.”

“Oh yeah, gotta snag the single doctor to keep him in town.” I laughed without humour. “That’s what was said on the post that Ryan had deleted. That I’m trying to trap you to make you stay. Oh god.” I looked away, horrified. “I’m not trying to do that, for the record. I promise you I’m not doinganythinglike that—”

Harry cupped my jaw, bringing my gaze back to his. “I don’t think that, Stacey.” His words rushed out as a snarl.

“So when I kissed you in the bar, when you arrived?”

“Oh yeah, everyone noticed. Gossip will be going around tonight. Someone has probably texted Ryan already.”

Keeping one hand around my cheek, he pulled out his phone from his back pocket. “What’s this community group called?”

“Ballydoon Community Group.” I stood on tiptoes to look at his screen. “What are you doing?”

“Should’ve got onto this community chat thing weeks ago. Time to step up and set the story straight.”

“Harry …”

His thumb moved over the keyboard quickly. “I’m going to own our story. It’s not Ryan’s job, not anymore. This is about us.”

“Own our story?”

His phone pinged. “Good. My join request was approved.”

He let go of my cheek and quickly wrote a social media post. Not that I could see what he was writing.

Harry looked up from his phone. “Stacey, I only want to see you. No one else. Do you feel the same?”

“Yes.” I grinned, my heart swelling.

He grinned back. “I don’t know what that means for after my time here, but for now, I’m talking exclusive.”

Harry pressed something on his screen and then handed me his phone. My eyes widened.

“Hi everyone,” I read out loud. “I’m the new doctor at Stanmore Medical Practice and it’s been a great few weeks living in Ballydoon and working in Stanmore. I’m pleased to say Stacey Turner has agreed to be my girlfriend and if you have any opinions about that, all comms can be directed to me.” My eyes flicked up to his. “Oh my god, Harry. Girlfriend?”

He gently took back his phone, turning off the screen.

“That’s right. Girlfriend and boyfriend.”

“I’ve never had a boyfriend before.”
