He nodded and pulled me closer. “I know, and I’ll be here, Stacey. And I’ll get scared sometimes, too. I only ask one thing of you, Firebird, before I make love to you again.”

“And what’s that?”

“To face the fear, and the wonderful, together.”

I grabbed his hand, squeezing it tight. “Together.”

EPILOGUE

HARRY

Ballydoon Community Group:

Margaret posted yesterday 4.30 p.m.:

I’m finally retiring and my son, Josh, is taking over the chocolate shop in the near future but I’ll be around helping him get settled into Ballydoon pace of life. I’m open this weekend 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sat - Sun.

Today marked our five-month anniversary of our one-night stand. Although Stacey insisted on calling it our anniversary of when we met at the racetrack.Pfft, same thing.

We were back at Walston Park Raceway; me as pit crew and Stacey was our driver.

Decals printed withProudly sponsored by Stanmore Medical Centrewinked in the sun on the side of her car.

My phone pinged with group chat messages:

Mel: Is Stacey racing soon? We can see you in the purple shirts.

Mel: Tell her good luck from us.

Andy: Shirts look rad, Dr Tradie.

Mel: *photo attached*

I grinned at a selfie of Mel, Steve and Andy in the stands pulling faces, all wearing their purple racing shirts.

Me: will do and very soon

Ryan sauntered over, looking down at the front of his purple tee-shirt. Benji waved from the support van and Phil was in the driver’s seat. We all wore identical tees. The front saidFirebird’s Pit Crewin purple with a black and red fairy wren, andTurner’s Racingon the back, with a flaming tyre. Under that was, proudly sponsored by Stanmore Family Medical Practiceand our phone number and website, along with her contact details for her Design Gems business.

I was so proud; of Stacey, of how the medical practice was going, of us.

“Cool shirts, Doc. You did good,” Ryan said, clapping my shoulder. “Stace seen it yet?”

“Nope, she’ll be here any second.” I patted down my front jeans pocket.Everything was safe and ready.

I looked up to find Ryan watching me. “You’re going to ask her today, aren’t you?”

I nodded, letting out a long breath. Not that Ryan knew this was where I first met his sister five months ago nor how it had gone down in the back seat of Lorraine.

For Stacey’s official return to the racing circuit with her medical clearance, I was very pleased the specially made driving suit I’d sourced from the US had arrived in time. The fabric would help keep her cool with her racing schedule during the warm weather.

She should be dressed and here by now. I glanced at my watch.

“She’ll say yes.” Ryan said, stretching his neck. “And, I’m happy for you. Both of you.”

He stuck out his hand and I shook it.

“Thanks, man. I appreciate it.”
