“What deal have you two just made?”

We sprung apart. Stacey wore her new racing suit, hand on hip and helmet in the other. Her hair loosely hung over one shoulder in a braid.

I grinned, my heart beating a little faster. She’d modelled the suit for me last night and had slowly taken it off, revealing her nakedness underneath. No shyness, shame or fear showing me her scars; Stacey had stood before me with confidence, desire, and love.

“Oh my god, you have matching shirts.” She pointed at our chests. “Do a twirl, nice and slow.”

I laughed and winked. I’d told her to do the same thing last night as part of her racing suit strip tease. Ryan rolled his eyes but spun around anyway. I indulged Stacey by slowly swinging my hips, my arms locked behind my head.

“So, you like them?” I asked.

Stacey walked up to me. “You did this.”

I nodded. “Gotta have a pit crew for your return to the track. Mel, Steve and Andy have shirts too. They’re in the stands and said good luck.”

“I love them. They’re great,” Stacey whispered before giving me a quick kiss.

A camera’s shutter went off several times and we turned to find Sam giving us a smug grin.

“I’m an official photographer.” Sam pointed to her pass hanging off a lanyard around her neck. “Track officials called last night to offer me a media pass. Newspaper is going to buy the photos off me.”

Stacey smothered her best friend in a hug. Sam mouthed over Stacey’s shoulder:Are you going to ask today?

I quickly nodded. Stacey let Sam. “That’s just so good, Sam.”

“Get out there and give me some hot photos, okay?”

Stacey looked between us, her eyes shining. “Guys, I’m just so—”

“Stacey! Time to get in the car!” Uncle Bruce boomed.

Sam gave her a quick peck on the cheek. “Time for me to get into position for some photos. Break a record today, hey?”

Stacey nodded, swiping at her eye.

Ryan waved to Benji and the support van. “Well, okay. Time for me to, um, do something.” He quickly walked off with a meaningful glare my way.

Stacey quirked an eyebrow. “What was that look for?”

“Nothing,” I said too quickly.

She squeezed my bicep. “Are you okay?”

I nodded vigorously. “Yep, all good.”

“I’m going to be fine,” Stacey said. She thinks I’m worried about her racing today.“I’ve been practising, and I won’t crash.”

I cupped her jaw and kissed her, sliding my tongue over hers. I wanted to give her a kiss that said in no uncertain terms how I felt for her, and her driving ability.

I broke our kiss with a sigh. “You’re going to own the track today, Firebird.”

She smiled, slightly dazed. “I gotta go. Maybe we can celebrate later together in Lorraine.”

“You can count on it.”

“I’m wearing the black lace underwear from the night we met,” she added in a low voice.

“Be prepared to lose it later,” I growled.
