My traitorous vagina, though, clenched with joy at the sound of his deep voice.

I clutched my drawings, staring dumbly at his hand between us.

“Stacey,” Pam said through gritted teeth, looking at me like I’d just acquired a brain injury. “Dr Cain is the new doctor for the practice and is starting today. Please make him welcome.”

I couldn’t move. Or speak. Maybe I was having a stroke. I was paralysed with the exception of an over-excited vagina that really wanted to welcome the new doctor to Stanmore.

Harrison slowly withdrew his hand. “Stacey,” he said, as if trying out my name. “Nice to meet you,” he repeated.

I nodded with my mouth open like a goldfish.

Harrison suddenly clicked his fingers and pointed. My body jolted, and I stepped back. More movement restored. Not a stroke, then.

“Stacey. Short for Anastasia.”

Not a stroke, just my worst nightmare. My cheeks burned red. Still speechless. Possibly had stopped breathing too. I was about to die right here, right now. Cause of death: reunited with handsome doctor.

“Why, yes, that’s right,” Pam said. “That was a good guess, Dr Cain.”

“Yes. A very good guess,” Harry murmured.

“Stacey has just come back from leave today,” Pam said, frowning at my mute display. “She’s our receptionist and enrolled nurse when I’m not available or on lunch. Dr Cain is here for up to eight weeks as Doc Larcombe is dealing with a sudden health issue. The Doc took leave soon after you did. He’s okay but recovering. I’ll update you properly later.”

I managed a weak smile.

“Doctor MacIntyre will be in one day a week to help, too. Oh—” Pam’s face suddenly lit up. “You and Dr Cain have something in common. Stacey used to drive cars competitively. Dr Cain’s a car racing fan, dear.”

I watched Pam, horrified.I was such a fool to think I could keep the race a secret.

“A big fan, yes.” Harry watched me, not smiling.

His tone was light but I could feel the accusation all the same:you lied to me.

I opened my mouth and all that came out was a squeak.

“National Junior Champion, weren’t you, Stacey?”

I nodded dumbly.

“Yes, she used to race with my son, Phil. A pity you didn’t meet him on Saturday. He was quite ill. Food poisoning. Still is. But he set a new record in the semi-finals. Stacey, Phil said you helped as pit crew. You and Dr Cain could have met if I’d known you’d be there.”

I swallowed hard. Phil had covered for me.Thank you, Phil.

“But you don’t race now, Nurse Turner?” Harrison asked again.

Pam answered again on my behalf. “I’m afraid Stacey had an accident when she was younger and—”

“Yes. I did,” I blurted far too loudly. “An accident stopped me driving on the race circuit. And I’m not an enrolled nurse yet. Still have my final assessment for my diploma. I’m not Nurse Turner or a race driver. I’m just Stacey.”

I was breathing hard. They both stared.

One of Harrison’s eyebrows hitched up. “I see. It’s good to meet you, Stacey,” he repeated, offering his hand again.

I slowly extended mine and we shook.

My vagina was jubilant for the touching. Heat pooled in my belly. Sparks jolted up my arm as his thumb ever so slightly caressed my skin on top of my hand.

Harrison’s nostrils flared.
