“No one seems to know. Your grandparents are freaking out. Your mum and dad are with Emmet. I haven’t told them yet and I don’t think anyone else has either.”

“He can’t have gone far. He’s just had major surgery.”

“Staff have looked everywhere and I’ve had a good look around but couldn’t see him anywhere.”

“This is crazy. Maybe he went to use the bathroom or something?”

“I had a look at his notes. He’s not been seen since almost four hours ago when his last observations were taken,” Brodie explained.

CHAPTER 43

TWO WEEKS LATER

They say there’s no place like home and the look on Sophia’s face when she sat down on her own sofa that afternoon confirmed the sentiment. Doctor Gunner had pulled a few strings they both knew he probably shouldn’t have, but she would be forever grateful to him. Not just for taking care of her and completing the transplant. But, for getting her home as quickly as possible afterwards so she could heal in her own surroundings rather than the hospital. Sophia had spent more than enough time there over the last year.

“Smile,” Brodie said as he took yet another photo of her. He’d been taking them all day, wanting to document every blessed moment.

She wrinkled her nose, and he took the photo, anyway.

“It doesn’t feel right, me being home and now Emmet being in hospital.”

“You need to not try to link the two. The two things have nothing to do with each other. I know it’s a shitty situation, but you have to keep the two separate.”

“Easier said than done.”

“But it's important to try,” he said, taking the seat next to her on the sofa. “You have to focus on your own recovery. The fact that we can sit here like this. This was beyond our wildest dreams just a couple of weeks ago.”

Sophia’s eyes shined as she smiled a full smile at her man, and he rubbed her thigh.

Before she got sick, there was no doubt that he’d have grabbed her face and kissed her or pushed her down and climbed on top of her, but he was cautious now. She was touched by it, but at the same time, she wished he didn’t have to be careful with her.

“Are you hungry? I could cook us something?” he offered.

“Shall we sit outside?”

“We can eat out there if you like?”

“I’d love that. Let’s eat under the stars. I’ve spent too many nights staring up at hospital ceilings.”

“You don’t know how many nights I’ve spent thinking about moments like this. When I can ask you what you feel like for dinner and you’ll just be there. Looking exactly like that. Your hair loose. No, make up. Just you. You’re all I want. You and this.”

A familiar wildfire started up in Sophia’s heart as she watched his soft lips shower her with so much love.

“So, it’s a, yes? You’ll grill me some chicken?”

“I’ll do whatever you want. Cook. Carry you up a mountain. Build you a spaceship and fly you to the moon.”

Sophia giggled. “Cooking will be plenty for tonight.”

“Okay, wait here and I’ll get this party started.”

“I can help. There must be something I can do that’s useful.”

“You can take a turn tomorrow. Let me handle tonight. I want to make a fuss over you.”

“Fine. I’m not going to complain. I’m going to get stuck into this.” She leaned forward and pulled a book out of her leather tote bag.

“Another smut fest?”
