"You'll be out of here in no time," Jayda said.

"There's been an accident. I'm guessing no one's told you?"

The blank expression on all their faces told her she was right, so she continued.

"Emmet and Brodie were in a crash on their way back to the Bay. It was a bad one. Brodie's okay, but Emmet's not good."

Callie's face froze on hers. “I thought he must have got caught up with work or something. I didn’t stop to think something could have happened to him.”

"What happened?" Lennon asked.

"His legs are pretty injured. He’s in here. Downstairs. They've operated and said nothing is permanently damaged but he’s pretty bashed up.

"What?” Paige gasped in horror.

"Oh, my god," Kate added.

"What the hell?" Lennon looked shocked to the core.

"I need to go and see him," Callie said.

"I don't think he'll be up to it." Sophia knew her brother better than anyone. He wouldn't want anyone to see him the way he was, least of all Callie.

"Sophia's right, it's too soon. He's probably still taking everything in," Paige added.

"We could get him some flowers or something to let him know we're thinking of him?" Kate suggested.

"Do people buy guys flowers? Is that a thing?" Paige asked.

"Well, it doesn't have to be flowers. Just something to let him know we care," Kate said.

"Your poor Mum and Dad. They must be going out of their minds." Jayda exchanged a glance with Sophia.

"I'm going down to see him in a bit so I can pass on all your well wishes."

Callie nodded. Sophia sensed that she was struggling to keep it together by the fact that she refused to look her in the eye. Seeing her friend hurt over her brother made it sink in further just how serious things were.

"When can you get out of here?" Paige asked.

"I'm not sure. As soon as I can, I just want to get home. "

"I'll bet. How soon can they tell if it's worked?" Lennon asked.

"It can be different for everyone. I don't think there's a sure-fire way of knowing. We just have to take each day as it comes and hope for the best."

"Well, you look better already, doesn't she?" Kate smiled.

"Definitely. There's colour in your cheeks for a start." Paige agreed.

Brodie flew into the room as though he had forgotten that everyone was visiting.

“Can I talk to you for a second?”

Sophia’s friends didn’t need to be asked twice. They said their goodbyes and promised to come back the next day.

“Austin's gone,” Brodie blurted out.

“What do you mean, gone? Gone where?”
