But the change in our routine is throwing me off.

And I’m dying to know why she needs to meet earlier.

I’m dying to know if it has to do with some guy.

Lennon looks up at me, confused. “Not very much. You?”

I’m grateful that she protects our transactional relationship for me.

“Oh, same,” I say. And I should leave it there. But again, my mouth gets away from me. “I mean, I was just wondering if you had some hot date you had to get ready for tonight that you needed all day to get ready for. Not that you would need all day. Because you don’t. You really don’t.”

Lennon just blinks at me, even more confused and maybe just a touch angry now.

“Let’s just get to the assignment, okay?” she asks, pivoting.

Yes, please.

I don’t know what’s happening to me.

Why am I all of a sudden unraveling in front of her?

Is the idea of her with another guy really driving me that crazy?

She could have been dating someone for weeks and I’d have no idea. It’s none of my business. I made it none of my business.

I need to get a grip.

“Yes, absolutely,” I tell her. “Let’s get to the assignment.”

I reach for my book, but instead, I slam it against the wall.

Lennon gasps. “Wow, are you okay?”

I lean down and snatch the book from the ground, hitting my head on the table on my way back up.

“I’m fine! I’m fine!” I assure her, very unconvincingly. “It’s just this room. It’s very small. Don’t you think it’s small?”

Lennon nods. “I mean, for you, yeah, but you’re acting so strange.”

“I just need to take a breath,” I say, standing up.

“O-Okay,” Lennon stammers, looking at me like I’m a crazy person, which in this moment, I definitely am.

But as I am getting ready to take a lap around the center, a voice comes over the intercom.

“Attention… Attention all students and faculty… Please be advised that we are under a severe tornado warning. At this time, we ask that all students get to a safe space away from windows. We will keep you updated. Please stay safe.”

I immediately grab the door and close it shut.

Tornadoes can get pretty bad in our area. We know the drill. We know the protocols. They come out of nowhere and we just pray that we don’t get in their way.

I see Lennon start visibly shaking.

“We’re on the first floor,” I tell her, trying to assure her, knowing that I probably can’t. “We’re in an interior room and there are no windows. We are in a good situation.”

Lennon shakes still. “These buildings are so old.”

I don’t think.
