But here she is, standing with a backpack hanging off of her little back, and her hair in my signature braid. She asked me if she could have a soccer ball keychain for her backpack zipper, and of course, I said yes.

“Okay, now, one with the sign,” Nora instructs, handing Busy the small blackboard.

Nora bought this blackboard for Busy to fill out every year of school.

It lists things like:

I want to be ____ when I grow up.

My favorite food is ____.

This year, I want to ____.

My palms start to sweat.

Nora didn’t see Busy fill out her chart last night. And Busy and I formed a plan.

“That’s so sweet,” Nora says. “Wait, since when is your favorite food a hamburger? What happened to pizza?”

Busy holds her smile while Nora keeps reading.

Then, Nora drops the camera at her side and looks at me, concerned.

“Did you see?” she whispers to me.

The last line reads, “This year, I want to see my dad and Miss Nora get married.”

I nod at Nora.

And I drop down to one knee.

“I saw,” I told her.

Then, I take the ring box out of my pocket and open it for Nora to see.

“Nora,” I tell her. “I love you with my whole heart. You make me laugh. You make us happier than we have been in a long time. So, Busy and I want to know…”

“Will you marry us?” Busy asks, running over and throwing her hands around Nora’s legs.

Nora starts to tear up.

Then she nods, kneeling down along with me, and taking Busy into her arms.

“Yes,” she says. “Yes, I will marry you two.”

And I cry too.

Busy pulls all three of us until a hug and I kiss Nora.

I never felt like anything was truly missing when it was just me and Busy. Our life was good.

But now?

Our life is amazing.
