He was right about that.

I practically took my cell phone in the shower with me.

And with Paul living an hour away, it was harder for us to get together than it used to be.

I cleared my schedule without overthinking it.

I told myself that it was because I needed a vacation.

But truthfully?

I made the decision because of Ms. Conn.

Beth.

There’s still a part of me that hopes she will finally see me as more than just her son’s best friend.

And maybe, that will happen this week.

Chapter Two

Beth

I’m turning 40 this year, but I still feel exactly the way I did at 20.

Getting older is weird.

The years keep ticking by, the calendar keeps flipping, and more candles line up on your cake.

But really? You don’tfeelany different.

I learned things, yes.

And sometimes there are parts of my life that feel very far away.

For example, I got pregnant at 15 and that feels like another lifetime ago.

But in my body, I still feel young and vibrant and alive.

In fact, I think my forties may be the best decade I have coming for me. It’s just a hunch, but I just feel like something great is coming for me.

And it all starts with this beach trip.

When I pull up to the house, I nearly lose my breath.

It’s freaking beautiful, like something out of a catalogue.

The whole exterior is painted in this pretty robin’s egg blue with cream shutters by the windows. There’s a screened-in front porch with an adorable swing and Adirondack chairs. I park my car and get out quickly to explore more.

My friend Lisa told me about this place. She took her family of five here for summer vacation, and while it is a little overkill for just me and the boys, I knew I had to come here when she described it.

Picturesque.

Relaxing.

Heavenly.

I didn’t think twice about putting the money down. I am going to be 40. It’s time for me to live a little.
