I’m normally gone by now.

“Well, actually, I’m sort of working with Griffin? Temporarily?” I phrase my sentences like questions to make the news seem less alarming.

But his face gives the whole shock of it away.

Walsh is stunned.

“Heather?” the barista calls my name.

I bolt to the counter.

When I return, Walsh stops me from breezing right past him.

“Wait, hang on,” he says. “Why didn’t you tell me this? I feel like I’m being ambushed.”

“I know,” I say, hanging my head and refusing to meet his eyes. “Look, it’s only for a couple of days, tops. I am just trying to get my parents off my back. They think I’m a basket case and they want me to spend time with the golden boy. So, I am. But then, I’ll be back to country-hopping and you won’t have to worry about me. I’m sorry. I don’t know… I don’t know how to handle these things.”

And then I leave, because that is what I am best at doing.

Still, I feel terrible about it.

Chapter Five

Walsh

I’m at a loss for words.

I am in shock as I grab my coffee off the counter.

I am still in shock as I board the elevator.

I am completely in shock as I walk down the hallway toward my office and see the back of Heather’s blonde hair in Griffin’s office.

This is a nightmare.

I slept with my boss’s sister last night, she snuck out of my house this morning, and now she fucking works here.

I should just start typing up my letter of resignation right now.

I take a seat in my chair and try my best to just blend into my office.

I can fake appointments today. That would at least get me out of the same breathing space as Griffin and Heather. Right now, my schedule today is totally clear. So, I really need to start filling this up quick.

There’s a hard knock on my door.

“Good morning, homie,” the voice of my nightmares echoes in my ears.

I look up.

There’s Griffin with wide eyes and an even wider smile.

And there’s Heather, cowering behind him, hands tucked around a notebook that is purely for show.

“Morning, Griffin,” I say. “Did you have a good time at your party?”

He nods. “Yes, but I have a hell of a hangover this morning and I totally forgot my kid sister is here to shadow for the next few days. Talk about your timing, huh?”

I smile and nod and say something generic like, “That’s the way it goes.”
