“Say, listen, I have a ton of meetings to run today that I can’t really have her tagging along for… you mind taking her today?” he asks.

And I just about die right here on this hideous carpet floor.

What can I say?

There’s literally only one right answer.

“Sure thing,” I tell him, trying to sound as casual as possible. “My day is pretty light. I can show her the ropes.”

Griffin gives me prayer hands and says, “Thanks, man, you are a lifesaver.”

Then, he turns to Heather and says, “Sis, just do whatever Walsh here tells you. For today, he’s the boss, okay? Okay.”

Before she can say anything, Griffin disappears down the hall.

I smile pretty smugly in her direction.

Today, I’m the boss.

Maybe this day started off as a complete disaster, but now? Now, the tables are turning in my favor.

And I think I might enjoy this after all.

Sitting in my office, Heather does her best to make it known that she is miserable.

She sinks into her chair.

She picks at her fingernails.

She refuses to look at me.

“So,” I say in my most authoritative voice, “what are your career goals, Ms. Marks?”

Heather glares up at me and says, “Bite me.”

I try not to laugh. “Well, it’s a good thing that you have nepotism on your side because your attitude sucks.”

Heather sits up and faces me. She lowers her voice so that the people in the cubicles behind her can’t hear and says, “Okay, I get it. I was a jerk and now, according to my shit-for-brains of a brother, you get to be the boss of me. You can punish me all you want. Today was going to be trash, either way, so have at it.”

Heather lowers herself back into the chair and resumes picking at her fingernails.

I laugh.

She clearly does not know me at all.

“Grab your stuff,” I tell her.

She looks up at me questioningly. “Why?”

“Because I said so,” I tell her. “Grab your stuff and meet me by the elevator.”

She stomps out of my office to grab her purse and I shut off my computer.

As I walk to the elevator, I remember how I felt this morning when Heather was gone.

Terrible.
