Embarrassed.

Disappointed.

Mostly, I felt like I had missed out on a chance at something more.

As great as the sex was–and it was fucking amazing–there had been more between us leading up to our alone time in my apartment.

What she said to me at the bar really resonated with me. Heather… inspired me. And I want that in my life. Hell, I need that in my life.

So, now that I have a whole day with her, I am not going to let that chance slip by me again.

I need to figure out the real reason she ran.

And I need to convince her that she doesn’t need to do it again.

Chapter Six

Heather

As soon as I am in Walsh’s car, it’s like I am a new woman. I know we still are “on the clock,” but the fact that we are no longer stuck inside that office building instantly puts me in a better mood.

I slide open the cover of his sunroof and crack my window open to let fresh air inside.

Walsh laughs at me.

“Man, for a girl who only spent twenty minutes inside of a corporate environment, you sure are acting a tad dramatic, don’t you think?” he asks.

He is not wrong.

“I just think it’s unnatural,” I tell him. “Working on top of each other like ants? Breathing in recycled air all day long? Having to let someone know when you are going to eat lunch? It feels like school all over again.”

Walsh shrugs. “Yeah, but you get paid now.”

“Not nearly enough,” I tell him.

He exits off the interstate. “Yeah, I can’t argue with you there.”

I thought he would be taking me downtown somewhere for a meeting, but this is a random exit. There’s a McDonald’s. There is a sign for an elementary school. But I do not see any businesses that look like they have anything to do with us.

“Where are we going?” I ask him, continuing to look out the window.

Walsh glances over at me with a knowing look and says, “Just enjoy the view.”

I blush at the callback to my words.

I stare outside and say, “Well, there’s hardly much to look at.”

He keeps driving.

I keep waiting.

Finally, I get some hint of a destination.

Walsh pulls into a parking lot for Lace Park and I feel a wave of relief fill my body. We aren’t going on a business meeting at all. Walsh and I are going to play hooky.

I have never been to this park before, but from what I can see so far, it’s beautiful. There are stunning oak trees scattered in my line of sight. There are patches of rose gardens and walking trails. And just in front of me, a duck pond catches my eye.

I look to Walsh as he switches the car into park and I say, “We headed to close a big deal?”
