“Maybe,” she winks. “But in all seriousness, he’s a hard ass. But it’s what we need to keep you safe. I’m glad he’s covering all the bases. And did I mention he’s hot?”

“Is that why you hired him?”

“Well, him being eye candy certainly helps. You’ll be around him all the time and I want to make sure he’s appealing.”

I laugh and shove Gia in the shoulder. “Just don’t look at him too much or Eric will get jealous.”

She picks invisible lint off her shirt. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure you don’t.”

“Anyway, he’s in the suite next to yours. So, if anything happens, he’ll be readily available.”

“Hopefully nothing will.”

“I hope so.” Gia stands and smooths the wrinkles from her red skirt. “Security will come get you in a few hours for soundcheck. Afterwards I’ll have you meet Liam and get you both acquainted before you get ready for the show.”

My heart beats quickly in my chest, and I swear my stomach threatens to drop out of my butt. “L-Liam?” I stammer.

“Yeah, that’s his name. Didn’t I tell you that?”

I shake my head.

“Why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?”

“No reason.”

Realization covers her features. “Ex with the name Liam?” she asks. “That’s happened to me before, the total worst. I’ve sworn off all men with the name Brad.”

I swallow. “Something like that.”

“Well, he’s gonna be a good Liam, I swear. If he’s not, we’ll fire his ass and get a new guy named Tyler or something,” she grins. “See you later, Birdie.”

She’s gone before I can say goodbye, and I’m left with thoughts of Liam Miller swimming in my head yet again. I head back to the mini bar—I need another drink.

“Yes, yes, yes!!!” I cry, pounding my piano keys. “That sounded amazing, everyone.”

“Hell yeah it did!” Kevin agrees, strumming out some ridiculous chords on the guitar.

It feels good to get back on stage with my band after this morning. Even with my world being turned upside down, singing, the strum of cords and banging of drums, it rights everything; grounds me.

“Did you hear that high note Lorraine hit?” Jenny, one of my backup singers asks joyfully.

“Hard to miss,” I joke, “But it was phenomenal. Should we run it one more time, or are we good?”

“I’m good,” Jane says, swirling a drumstick between her fingers.

“All good,” the rest of the band resounds.

“You good, B?” Kevin asks.

“I think so. I was a little worried about adding in that last Cranberries cover, but it sounded better than I thought it would.”

“We can run it again,” Sarah, my bass player adds. “We don’t mind, Birdie.”

“Nah, I think we could all use a little extra downtime today. We can practice more tomorrow if we think we need it after the show tonight. Let’s break.”

At that the band all gathers around me. We all have a tradition of coming together in a circle before and after every sound check and show. I don’t know how it started, but it’s our thing now. We all put our hands one on top of the other in the center and wait for our cue.
