“What’s the word?” Kevin asks, a grin on his lips.

“Birdie is the word!” we all say together.

“What’s the word?” he says again louder.

“Birdie is the word!” we chime again to match his energy.

“What’s the word?!”

“BIRDIE IS THE WORD!”

We all push our hands down then up to the sky, breaking into various bird noises. It’s absolutely crazy, but I love it. Everyone laughs and then hugs before we disperse. The band is going back to the hotel but I’m going to my dressing room so I can meet Liam the Bodyguard. I had been so involved in soundcheck I didn’t even think to look around to see if he was watching.

Eric appears, his face much happier now than the last time I saw him. “You ready to meet your beefy bodyguard?”

“Not you, too.”

“He’s attractive, I won’t lie. Looks like he could kill me, which I guess is a good thing?”

“You’re bonkers.”

“Come, come. No time to waste. He’s in your dressing room scowling like a grumpy old man. Not sure why. Maybe he has RSF.”

“RSF?”

“Resting scowl face.”

Laughter bursts through my lips. “Again, you’re bonkers.”

“It’s why you love me.”

“Maybe,” I shrug before following him backstage.

Once we round the corner and arrive at the dressing rooms, I see Gia and Shea in the hallway giggling like schoolgirls. It makes me wonder if my whole band and crew is going to have the same reaction to this guy. They straighten up when they see me and Eric, both smiling wide.

“Ready?” Shea asks. She looks cute today in a knee-length skirt, black blouse and her purple hair pulled back into a high ponytail. Makes me wonder if she dressed that way for Liam.

My stomach burns at the thought of his name again. I’m going to have to get used to this guy's name. Hopefully he’s nothing like my Liam. Not that he was ever,myLiam.

I nod, and Gia pats my shoulder, opening the door for me. “Watch your step,” she says, but it’s too late.

My brain expected the door to open to a flat floor, but instead there’s a short step down. I go falling. My stomach drops out as I feel gravity pull me down. As I brace myself for the inevitable faceplant, I make a small squeak, but to my surprise, I don’t hit the ground.

A warm hand grabs my arm and pulls me up as if I weigh nothing. Whoever this guy is, he’s very strong. I’m not a small gal, so hoisting me up from certain death is not a simple move.

“Please don’t die on my first day,” a deep voice croons. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up on end, and the sudden urge to throw up washes over me.

With my feet planted solidly back on the floor, and my body upright, I turn my head to my savior. Chocolate brown eyes meet mine, and a small half-grin graces the thin pink lips I would know anywhere. My mouth drops open, but no words come out. I feel as if I’m living in a dream. No, scratch that. A nightmare.

“Are you okay?” Liam asks. He knows damn well I’m not okay.

“Take your hands off of me,” I demand, my voice quiet yet stern.

Liam’s grin widens, as if to say, “So, this is how you want to play it?”He takes his large hand off my bicep and steps back.

“What the hell are you doing in my dressing room?”

He lets out a low laugh, brushing his hands through his tapered dark tresses.
