“Thanks, Birdie. Now we have to find someone for you to have sex with… maybe a certain boy you always talk about?”

Now it’s my turn to blush deep red. “I don’t know who you’re talking about.”

Wren rolls her eyes dramatically. “Oh please. You and Liam are always together. If I didn’t know you both so well, I’d think you two were an old married couple. You certainly bicker and bat your eyelashes at each other like my parents do.”

I’m blushing so hard my ears turn hot. “Do you really think he could like someone like me?”

Wren rolls her eyes. “I know he does… and you realize you finally admitted that you like him to me, right?”

I groan. Though my obsession with Liam is apparently obvious, I have never told any of my friends I like him. At least not with words. “Fine, I like him.”

Wren grins hard. “I knew it!”

My heart stops. “Wait, you said ‘I know he does’… are you sure he likes me?”

She smirks. “Well, it’s obvious the boy enjoys spending time with you. And Ben may have said something.”

“What did Ben say?” I ask quickly.

“Just that Liam is head over heels for you.” She says as if it’s common knowledge.

My hands turn clammy, and I swear I would faint if I had low blood sugar or something. Not to mention I’m sitting down.

“He said that?” My voice is quiet and sounds pathetic. But I’m in complete shock.

Wren’s smile goes wider. “Apparently so. I wouldn’t lie to you. So, my question is, what are you going to do about it Birdie bird?”

I can feel red splotches caused by my building anxiety begin to appear on my chest and neck—something that happens way too often.

I swallow hard. Mom would say Wren coming over and divulging this information about Liam on tonight of all nights, the night I plan on telling him my true feelings, is a sign from the Universe. And maybe it is.

An alert nearby from my desktop computer goes off, making us both jump. Wren and I turn our heads toward each other, knowing what that noise is. It’s an Instant Message alert. That can only mean one thing. It’s Liam. I must have forgotten to put an away message up.

“I think that’s a sign you should talk to him, tell him how you feel,” Wren chimes, taking the words from my mind. I clench my jaw, the anticipation of what might happen if Liam says he likes me too, or if he says he doesn’t, weighing heavily on me. At the thought of the latter, my stomach sours.

Wren places her warm hands on my shoulders. “You’re going to be fine. Your friends, no way he’s going to hurt you no matter if helikes youlikes you, or not.”

I nod vigorously. “You’re right.”

“I know I am,” Wren stands, grabbing her purse.

“Where are you going?”

“I gotta go home. Mom wants a family dinner or some BS. But I’ll see you later this weekend.”

“Alright.”

“You’ll be fine, girl. Text me what happens. Maybe I’ll sneak out and come over late if Liam isn’t already kissing your face off.”

I laugh and blush. “A girl can dream.”

“My darling, Birdie...” she winks. “Dreams do come true. Catch you later.” Wren leaves as fast as she came, not bothering to let me walk her out, and my computer pings again.

I make my way over, sitting in the office chair and moving the cursor. As the screen comes to life, I click the window open with Liam’s screen name on it.

“You can do this Birdie,” I pep talk myself. “You’re a badass woman who knows what she wants!” Mom taught me that mantra when I was only eleven. It’s weird, but I love her for giving me the ability to believe in myself from such a young age. Even if it involves swear words.

“Words are just words,”she always says.“You’re the one who gives them meaning!”I shake my head to rid the thoughts of my mother and focus back on Liam’s message.
