“If that’s so true, why are you killing me?”

“You’re an abomination that should’ve never been born. Even your mother thinks so.”

Her mother thinking horribly of her? Eva rolled her eyes. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

Eva took one more step back and hit her ankle against the chair her customer had just been sitting in. “Would it kill you to push the chair in?”Eva called out to no one in frustration.

As Eva worked on steadying herself from her near fall, Hella raised her hand in the air, a spinning ball of fire forming above her hand.

Eva cursed out loud as she refrained from rubbing her throbbing ankle. “How about we talk about this?” Eva asked, seeing no way to physically beat this woman. The only chance she had at surviving was by convincing Hella it wasn’t worth killing her.

Long shot at that one.

“Consider yourself lucky,” Hella spoke, the ball of fire in her hand gradually growing in size. “I’m giving you a quick death. If you were caught by any other unnatural being who only wanted to use your power, you’d bewishingfor death.”

Eva finally found it in herself to stand up straight again. “Quite frankly, that’s a risk I’m willing to take.” She tried to playfully shrug in some half assed attempt to lighten the mood. Judging by the way Hella pulled her hand back -as if to propel the ball of fire forward like a slingshot - told Eva that her stab at lightheartedness wasn’t working.

“It’s not a risk I’m going to take.”

Before Eva could say anything else to persuade Hella to change her mind, Hella’s hand shot forward, the ball of fire with it.

As a sorceress, one of the slowest species in the unnatural world, Eva couldn’t physically dodge that ball of fire in time.

I’m going to die.She thought as that blazing ball shot forward.

And then, as if a blessing from above arrived, she was shoved out of the way at a speed much quicker than she would have ever been capable of imitating, causing her to fly across the room wickedly fast.

Her body rammed against the far wall, one of her useless decorative pictures falling from the wall and onto Eva’s head with athud.

What the hell just happened? She thought, her head pounding from the impact.Well that hurt, she thought. But I’m still alive.

Whywas she still alive?

As Eva regained her senses, she focused ahead of her and realized an incredibly large man with dark hair that hung over his shoulders stood above her. Pale as anything, it didn’t take her long to recognize what she was looking at.

A vampire.

She never met a vampire, but she heard of them. They were vile creatures.

No creature is as vile as a sorceress. She reminded herself.

“That hurt,” Eva rubbed her head. In any other situation she’d be terrified to be in the presence of a vampire. Today? She’d much prefer him over Hella.

“Consider yourself lucky. If I was a second later you would have been fried meat.” He whipped his head back to Hella who was desperately conjuring up another ball of fire. He held a hand out to Eva when he looked back at her, “Come,” he commanded.

Eva hated many things in life. One of those things was being told what to do. But tonight? She didn’t hesitate before reaching for his hand. She never met a vampire, but she knew how exceptionally fast they were. He’d not only be able to dodge Hella’s attacks, but he’d be able to get them far away from here so quickly that Hella wouldn’t have a chance at following them.

Did Eva recognize that there was a huge possibility that this vampire was also a threat to her?

Absolutely.

Regardless, Eva decided it was best to live now and figure out how to escape from him later.

When in trouble, run.

As soon as her hand clasped around the vampire’s she was whisked out of the room at an unnatural speed, hearing only Hella’s furious screams in her wake.
