She needed to remind him that her rest didn’t matter. She wasn’t going to live long enough for it to matter.

“I…” How could she disagree with this man while seeing how distraught this made him?I have to, or I’ll die on this bed, she told herself. But her thoughts were no match against his pleading eyes. So she caved, deciding it didn’t matter enough for her to knowingly make him more distressed. “I don’t see why it matters.” Dying on this bed wouldn’t be so bad with him here. “So, can you tell me what it means?”

“I’m not sure what you’re asking.”

“Vioi. You’re always calling me that. I have no idea what it means.”

“Oh,” he grinned, the desperation in his eyes dissipating. “It means spirited. I knew you had more spirit than anyone else the moment I met you.”

She was actually quite surprised. He had been calling her spirited, which she decided was apositiveterm of endearment, for a long time. “You really thought that highly back when we met?”

He squeezed the hand he still held onto. “I did.” His smile faded. “I shouldn’t have brought you back to Artem. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“You were thinking about your sister, which is totally understandable.” He didn’t seem convinced, the sadness in his eyes remaining. “Sure, I don’t think I’d be waiting to die if I never crossed paths with Artem, but if I was given another chance to do it all over again knowing what I know now, I would in a heartbeat. The last few weeks have been the best of my life. I may be dying soon, but it will have been worth it.”

“Dying soon?” He looked confused. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Eva was really struggling to convince him that her predictions were set in stone. She was never wrong. If she was going to find a way to be allowed off this bed anytime soon, she needed to convince him of that once and for all. “Darius, I’m going to die, and nothing can be done to stop it from happening.” She let out a frustrated sigh. “I don’t know what else I can say to convince you of this.”

He didn’t look convinced. “You only envisioned yourself dying once.”

Was he serious? She had to laugh, despite her gloomy predicament. “Well, yeah. No one dies more than once.”

He let out a breath of air, as if relieved. He then loosened his hold on her hand and comfortably leaned back in his chair. He lookedrelaxed. “You don’t know,” he muttered. He seemed to come to some realization Eva didn’t exactly understand.

“Don’t know what?”

“You already died.” He announced in such a sobering tone it was impossible to believe he was joking.

Eva wasn’t sure if she was hearing him right. She couldn’t be. “I died?” There was absolutely no way she died. If she did, how was she here now? “That doesn’t make any sense.”

“It would, if you knew how you were brought back to life.” He dragged out a breath as if to prolong the moment.

“Well, how was I?” She asked, not understanding why he was stalling.

His expression grave, he finally told her, “It was your mother. She brought you back to life.”

Chapter Fifty-Seven

Eva Maas

Eva was stunned, though unsure whether or not to believe what Darius was telling her. She couldn’t see what reason he had to lie about her mother, but she also couldn’t see how what he said could possibly be true.

Her mother?

“No, not possible.” Other than the fact that Eva was certain she didn’t die, she hadn’t seen her mother in over a century. Hella recently explained to her, moments before nearly burning her to ashes, that her mother had been cursed since the day Eva was born. It didn’t make sense that her mother would miraculously defeat her curse when Eva needed it most. It sounded too good to be true.

“Your mother was cursed,” Darius began to explain.

Eva tightened her eyes. She only recently learned her mother was cursed, so she knew she didn’t tell Darius that information. She would have, but she didn’t get the chance to. “How do you know she was cursed?”

He seemed perplexed by her question. “Because your mother told me. Wait, you knew? I thought you believed your mother hated you.”

“I do. Uh, Idid. Before I was burnt to a crisp, Hellasograciously told me about the curse she bewitched my mother with.” If Darius also knew about the curse, that meant he might have actually seen her mother. If that was the case, maybe he was telling the truth.

She had to remind herself that he had no reason to lie about this.

“Hmm, I’m not sure how much Hella told you, but your mother was cursed for as long as you lived.”
