“Somehow, I believe I already knew,” Darius admitted, his eyes on Eva, her slow breaths soothing him. “I just didn’t want to believe it.” But now that it was said out loud, Darius had no choice but to believe it.

Gedeon made his way to the door, stopping a moment before leaving the room. “For what it’s worth, you were a great friend to me.”

And Gedeon was a great friend to him. Sadly, Darius didn’t believe he would be able to get over his betrayal anytime soon. Eva not only burned because of Gedeon, she died because of him. Without looking back to Gedeon, Darius told his old friend, “And we may be great friends again, but not today.”

Gedeon didn’t say anything. Darius listened to his footsteps as he left the room, possibly leaving Darius for the last time.

Trying not to think about his lost friendship, he focused on Eva and waited for her to wake up.

And waited…

Chapter Fifty-Six

Eva Maas

“I think she’s waking up,” Eva heard Darius quickly say, as if in a panic. Shaking, familiar hands grabbed one of hers. “Come to me, Eva. I’m waiting right here for you. I’m right here.” Desperation oozed out of each of his words.

He was waiting for her? Where had she been?

“I’ll give you two your time.” Eva heard Karina say. She didn’t sound anywhere near as panicked as Darius did.

Eva felt him tightly squeeze her hand, as if desperate for something. “Please. I’m right here with you.”

The agonizing memory of her burning alive surfaced. She was in pain.So much pain. Then, nothing.

She should have died. Why didn’t she die?

“Can you open your eyes?” Darius sweetly asked. Hearing his voice again made her realize that she survived Hella’s brutal attack. Darius came for her. He came for her, and he saved her. She was grateful for that, though she now feared how painful her true death would be.

Life was incredibly cruel. It was cruel enough to tease her about her inevitable death by giving her an excruciatingly painful near death experience. It was a terrible reminder that her death was still approaching.

“Please, Vioi,open your eyes.”

Vioi.

She flicked her eyes open. “What the hell does that mean?Vioi?”He was constantly calling her that, and he had been since around the time they met. Yet she had no idea what it meant.

“Ah, gods. You’re awake!” Darius was sitting beside the bed she was laying in. He looked like an absolute wreck. Despite his disheveled hair and sunken cheeks, he was grinning from ear to ear. Looking happier than she had ever seen him before, he bent down and pressed warm kisses against both of her cheeks.

His kisses managed to wipe away the painful memory that was plaguing her mind. “Can you promise to wake me up like thateverymorning?”

“Without question.”

Though he was in an unusually joyful mood, his appearance was disastrous. “Are you alright?” She asked. “You look like you went through hell and back.”

“That’s becauseI did.But I’m back now, and so are you.” He ran gentle fingers through her hair. “Let’s not scare me like that again.”

“I have no idea what I did.” Other than the brutal memory of fire scorching her skin off, she had no clue what happened. She supposed there was one positive to her impending death - she wouldn’t have to keep this painful memory for long.

She made a move to sit up, but Darius was quick to press a gentle hand against her chest, preventing her from pushing herself up any further. “Ah ah,” he shook his head, pressing her down until she was laying back on the bed. “Let’s take it slow. You’ve been sleeping for a long time.”

“How long?” She felt fine, which surprised her considering what she went through before losing consciousness.

“Uh, almost a week.”

A week?No way was she laying in this bed any longer. Her days were numbered, and she apparently spent an entire week of that time passed out in bed! “Well, I’m feeling fine. Therefore, I willnotbe spending another minute in this bed!”A week!

He shook his head. “Can you humor me?” The pleading desperation that interlaced with his words shocked Eva. The simple act of her getting out of the bed made him incredibly anxious. This was important to him.
