“Well, you’re right,” she huffed, hating to admit it. “I was born a sorceress.” Now it was her turn to look out the window, though she could feel his penetrating stare on her.

“Sorceresses aren’t born.”

“Congrats - you’ve met yourself a freak of nature.” As the only born sorceress it would’ve been nice to have had powers that were useful to her survival. But no, the world wasn’t that kind. When he didn’t immediately respond, she looked for a quick escape from the current topic of conversation. “I’m surprised you didn’t get a limo considering you can afford a private jet.” She ran her finger along the sticky door handle.Yeah, a limo would’ve been nice.

“Didn’t cross my mind.”

When she looked back to him, she realized he was looking out the window again, his body still as far away from her as he could possibly make it.

Eva tried not to feel hurt over his obvious need to distance himself from her. The planwasto make himnotwant her, wasn’t it? Clearly, she was doing an amazing job.

Why did she wish she wasn’t?

Sighing, Eva decided to look back out her window as well. She looked up to the sky - the stars visible on this cloudless night. She couldn’t help but wonder how wonderful the stars would look in Romania. Where they were going had to be less populated than the area surrounding Miami. “Why Romania?” She decided to ask, hating the silence.

“It’s where I live.”

“For how long?”

“As long as I can remember.” He obviously didn’t feel like talking much about his life. She didn’t care. She was used to a life of solitude, but sitting next to someone and saying nothingmade her uncomfortable.

“How long is that?”

“Since I was human.” His tone continued to lack any sort of feeling.

Eva was actually surprised to hear him say that. Most vampires were born, not turned. Long ago certain vampires turned humans by the masses, but those vampires almost always became slaves or disposable warriors. They typically never lived long. Other than that, vampire rulers stopped turning humans long ago.

If he was turned, that meant… “You were human?”

“Yes,” his grim response gave Eva all the answers she needed. Whatever life he lived, it was hard.

“I’m sorry. That must have been horrible.” She couldn’t think of anything else to say. Even if he wasn’t used as a slave, losing one’s mortality washard. It was difficult for the sorceresses to lose their mortality all those years ago, despite them having each other. That probably explains why they’re all miserable bitches now.

“It was.”

Eva examined Darius, wondering what this beautiful man could have gone through during his time on earth. She knew better than to ask.

Unable to help herself, Eva glanced up to the rear view mirror, looking into the taxi driver’s eyes. When their eyes met, he quickly looked away. She realized how ridiculous this conversation must sound to him. He must be thinking he was driving two lunatics.

Sounds about right,she thought.

It took everything in her power not to laugh. Right now was not an appropriate time to start laughing.

After a much too long bout of silence, Darius spoke up. “Time’s running short,” He snapped, looking away from the window and reaching for the seat in front of him. “How long until we reach our destination?” His heel began tapping against the floor of the car.

“Eh, I’d say about five more minutes. Give or take.”

Her eyes glued to Darius’ bouncing leg, she asked, “What is it?”

“Nothing,” he told her, but his leg continued to bounce. This sudden impatience must have come from somewhere.

“Uh, that’s a lie. Now tell me, why lie to your dear lifeblood?”

He grimaced. “We’re being followed.”

Eva whipped her head back. She couldn’t see anything. Figured he’d be able to sense someone following them while she couldn’t. Being a sorceress sucked. “By who?”

“Elves.”
