She wassucha boring immortal.

My life is about to get interesting, she thought. It only took two-hundred years.

His eyes darkened, “No one will find you there.”

“Of course. I didn’t doubt you.” She walked past him and to the front door, being sure to brush her shoulder against his when she walked by. Stopping at the entrance she looked back to him and asked, “Did I?”

“No, you didn’t,” he said, his eyes filled with a sadness she didn’t quite understand.

Chapter Eleven

Eva Maas

Eva and Darius had been riding in the backseat of a cab for the past hour. Despite Eva’s numerous attempts at conversing with the vampire fate had supposedly bound her to, he wasn’t having it. It seemed he preferred looking out his window, his body pressed so tightly against the side door she almost believed she had cooties.

What gave?

Back at her apartment, when he had called for the cab, Eva found herself perplexed. Honestly, who called for cabs anymore? “Why didn’t you just call an Uber?”

“Uber?”He had pronounced the word wrong, as if he never heard it before.

Then she remembered he probably never did. “Why am I surprised?” She had said before commenting under her breath, “Vampires.”

Certain species in the unnatural world were notorious for not being up to date with the world’s rapidly changing culture. Vampires were among those notoriously outdated species.

On the other hand, unnatural beings such as sorceresses, elves, and witches did a fantastic job at staying up to date with every new trend and innovation. Living among humans for so long, Eva couldn’t imaginenotkeeping up with the times.

Obviously Darius didn’t. She was surprised he even knew what a cab was.

Eva had been so distracted by the fact that she was in acabthat she only just realized she had no idea where the cab was taking them. “We’re driving away from both the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports,” she commented on the direction the driver was taking them, “How are we supposed to get to Romania?” While she was packing earlier, she made a conscious decision to pack her updated passport. Sure, she never accumulated enough money to travel over the years, but that didn’t stop her from hopingshe would one day be able to.

And now I will.

“We’re flying,” he stated in an uninterested tone, his gaze still focused out the window.

“Ah, private jet?” Eva shouldn’t be surprised. Unnatural beings were often loaded with money. That didn’t stop her from being disappointed that she couldn’t use her passport. “Aw, I was really hoping I’d finally get to use my passport. Maybe even get my first stamp.”

That got him to look her way, if only briefly. He looked both amused and confused. “You act as if you haven’t traveled before.”

“That would be correct.”

His eyes widened in surprise, despite the bottom half of his face remaining in an incredibly stubborn frown.

“You… you haven’t traveled anywhere?” Judging by his shock she concluded that he traveled.Often.

“I’ve only been alive two hundred years.”

He opened his mouth to say something, closed it as if deep in thought, then opened it again. “Weren’t sorceresses made one thousand years ago? Did youkilla sorceress?” It seemed like the idea of her killing another unnatural being sounded ridiculous to him, which seriously pissed her off.

“And if I did?” Sorceresses could be made if a female killed another sorceress and took that sorceress’ powers.

Eva was the exception.

“I find that difficult to believe.”

Eva pursed her lips, prepared to argue with him. She quickly decided against it. She admittedly didn’t partake in much fighting throughout her life and Darius already needed to save her ass.Twice.

She hid and lied. That’s how she survived.
