“I believe it’s time we come up with a plan B.” Darius stood beside Karina; arms firmly planted over his chest.

“Oh look, he speaks,” Eva sarcastically commented. Darius had been exceptionally mute the last few days. Any time hedidspeak it was to Karina, not Eva. He seemed to be doing everything he could to avoidEva since their encounter on the plane, which seriously pissed her off. If he wanted nothing to do with her, he was probably better off venturing out on his own and leaving her alone.

The other night, when Eva asked Karina why he didn’t just leave if he wanted nothing to do with her, Karina had claimed, “He’s struggling with his own demons. Give him some time.”

Bullshit.

Before he stormed away from Eva, back on the plane, he had expressed a fierce desire to be with Eva. Not only that, but he claimed she was incredible. If he thought she was so incredible, why was it so easy for him to ignore her the last several days?

“Every day we spend roaming these mountains unprotected is another day someone is given the opportunity to find you. This is too dangerous,” Darius told Eva.

It took everything for Eva to hold in her cynical laughter. “Then give me a better plan and quit acting like you care what happens to me while you’re at it.”

“Why wouldn’t I care?” Eva couldn’t determine whether or not he was serious.

“Whywouldn’tyou care?” Eva shot an irritated look his way, very aware that Karina had positioned herself between the two of them, as she had been doing the entire time they were in Pennsylvania. Squaring her shoulders, Eva said, “Uh, maybe because you haven’t said one fucking word to me since we landed here?”

Void of any visible emotion, he told her, “Any lack of communication on my part doesn’t have anything to do with how I feel about you.Trust me.I’ll do many things to keep you safe, and this isn’t it.”

Eva scoffed. “Yeah, like I believe that one.” She was terrified of him biting her and he despised her for it. It was that simple. Frankly, she didn’t care. He clearly believed he had some sort of ownership over her body because she was his lifeblood. She was surprised she expected him to think otherwise. All vampires believed they owned their lifeblood. Why would Darius be any different?

I bow to no one,Eva thought to herself. She’d rather live another century alone than comply with a man who believed he held ownership over her.

“The day is almost over,” Karina spoke up in an attempt to lessen the building tension. “Why don’t we give this place a try? If it doesn’t work out, we’ll think of a plan B back at the motel.” She brought up the sleazy motel they had been staying in. They were currently living their lives in two separate rooms. Darius booked a room for himself while Eva and Karina stayed in the other, completely separated from Darius.

As much as Eva wanted to act like she didn’t care that Darius was ignoring her, she did. It not only infuriated her, it confused her. She enjoyed his company. She didn’t understand how it was so easy for him to pass the days by without hers.

“You two can follow your plan B. I’m not going anywhere.” Eva didn’t want to admit it, but she was excited to find this young woman. She had the opportunity to find another sorceress that she might not hate. If she found a sorceress she didn’t despise, it might give her more reason to not hate herself, and what she was, so much.

“You go where we go,” Darius declared.

I do what I want, Eva thought, furious.

“Are you really going to force me to stay with you two?” Eva asked, her voice raising. Karina said nothing, but judging by the guilty expression on her face, Karina didn’t plan on letting Eva go either.

Eva hated to admit it, but if the two of them had no intentions of letting her go, then she wasn’t going anywhere. Her unnatural abilities were nothing compared to theirs. Wherever they wanted Eva to go, she would go. She had no choice in the matter.

She appreciated their desire to protect her, but she wished they would give her plan a little more time.

“Absolutely.” Darius grinned, clearly amused.

Eva made sure to reign in her anger a bit before speaking next. “Then let’s hope this place gives us all the answers we need.” Eva turned to the pub’s front door, sucking in an anxious breath before pushing it open. After exploring this pub, Eva didn’t believe she’d have any other chances to find the answers she was looking for. Darius and Karina were on the verge of giving up.

So. this pub may be the last shot she had.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Eva Maas

Save for three people and the bartender, the bar was empty. Can’t Take My Eyes Off of Youby The Four Seasons played on the jukebox. Other than that, it was overwhelmingly quiet.

Eva hissed through her teeth before walking forward. What were the odds any of the four people in here knew anything about werewolves?Slim to none, Eva. Slim to none.

All eyes landed on them as they made their way to the bar. Even the couple dancing on the dance floor stopped what they were doing to inspect the newcomers.

Ignoring the suspicious looks they received, Eva hopped onto a bar stool next to a young man with tousled hair and a shapely beard, a pint of beer in his hand. She shot him a friendly smile, understanding her best bet was to become friendly with the people in here before bluntly asking about werewolves. “It looks like you’re not used to seeing newcomers in here. Are you?” She asked the man next to her.

He seemed to blink himself out of a daze. “Huh?”
