Eva waved her hand around the dark, aged room. Despite this pub’s desperate need for a serious makeover, it felt extraordinarily welcoming. “Everyone’s looking at us. That couple hasn’t danced since we walked in, and Iknowthey were dancing a second ago.”

The guy grinned, scratching his beard. “Ah, sorry. We’re just surprised, I guess. Not often we see people like… Uh, well… No offense, but you three look a bit different than the norm.”

The three of them wereverydifferent from the norm. They weren’t even human. That didn’t mean what he said made any sense.

“Don’t mind him,” the bartender chimed in just as Karina took a seat on the stool next to Eva. “We believe old legends here. You three remind us a bit of those old legends.” The middle-aged, gruff looking bartender grinned. “Anyway, what can I do for you?” He lifted his hand to Eva. “Name’s Greg, I’ll be serving you tonight. Whatever you need, just let me know before complaining to management.”

Eva grinned, “Eva,” she told him, shaking his hand. “Who is management?” She looked around the bar one more time. Still empty.

“That’d be me,” he playfully winked, bringing his hand down to his side. Eva laughed, finding enjoyment in his humor. Everyone she had been encountering recently had been entirely too serious. It was nice to talk to someone who wasn’t for a change.

“What sort of legends?” Darius, no stranger to jumping straight to the point, asked the bartender, Greg. Eva let out an exaggerated sigh, making sure her annoyance was heard.Speaking of people who are too serious…

“Just some old legends we folks believe in. We’re a superstitious bunch.”

“Superstitious how?” Darius’ imposing tone was borderline threatening. His attitude was going to do nothing except scare off someone who could potentially give them information, leading to yet another dead end.

“Darius, how about we enjoy a drink?” Eva urged, hoping he would simmer down before his intensity scared people off.

“We don’t have time for that.”

“Correction.Youdon’t have time for that. I have all the time in the world.”

“We’re looking for someone,” Darius continued talking directly to Greg, blatantly ignoring Eva.

Greg looked between the two of them. The hostility between Darius and Eva obviously wasn’t a secret. If it wasn’t for Karina standing between them the last few days Eva might have made an attempt to rip Darius’ eyes out.

No, that was a lie. Eva would have madeplenty of attemptsto rip Darius’ eyes out.

Not seeming to feel threatened by Darius, the bartender said, “You never know. There may be a chance we can help you find who you’re looking for.”

“We’re looking for werewolves. Have you seen any?”

Eva’s eyes widened, taken aback by how blunt Darius was. He couldn’t be serious. “Darius! Do you not understand social norms or are you trying to sabotage what we’re doing here?”

His sly grin told Eva he knew exactly what he was doing. Eva cursed herself for finding his smile so sexy. “A bit of both.” At least he was being honest.

The young man sitting beside Eva began laughing. Eva expected that reaction. Darius was making them sound like lunatics. He might not understand the social norms of mortals, but Eva did. Evaonlyunderstood human social norms, and what Darius said deserved to be laughed at.

To humans, werewolves weren’t real.

“People don’t often come here looking for weres,” the laughing man said, the wordweresrolling off his tongue smoothly.Too smoothly.“Best to not look for them and consider yourself lucky they’re not looking for you.” His attention was set on Eva when he said, “I’ve already witnessed one beautiful woman taken by them. It’d be a tragedy to see it happen again.”

Why did Eva have the impression he was flirting with her?

“You saw a werewolf before?” Karina joined in on the conversation, seizing the opportunity to obtain more information as soon as it became clear that it was possible to do so.

The man’s eyes didn’t stray from Eva’s. “Once. He took a beautiful young girl. She reminded me a lot like you. Careful asking around for them or they’ll take you too.” He was insinuating they’d takeher.

“Why me?”

“Well, because they love beautiful women, of course.” Yes, he wasdefinitelyflirting with her.

“Fuck. This.”Darius didn’t try to hide his aggravation. “Let’s go. It’s time for plan B.” Was he jealous? He certainlysoundedjealous.

So he didn’t talk to Eva for three days and as soon as she began talking to another man Darius wanted to pull her away from him?

Not a chance.
