“Bring me to her!”Darius roared, his body quaking. He needed to find hernow.

“If I knew where the two of them wandered off to, I might have allowed you to watch her die. Alas, those two are lost to the forest.”

Those two…

That meant Eva was no longer with Kelly and Karina. She was alone in the forest with Hella.“You’re sick!” He spat, taking another step forward, ready to charge.

Excitement lit Artem’s features. To him, this was a game. “You may be a great warrior, but do not forget that you are several millennia younger than me. Naturally, I’d love to watch you try to defeat me. It’ll be like watching a mouse run into a trap.” He invited Darius to come forward with the wave of his hand. “You’ve been warned.”

Shit!Darius didn’t have a weapon on hand. Why did he leave that room without his sword? He was a damn fool! Eva was in danger and Darius couldn’t help her.

Right now, he wasn’t so sure he could even help himself.

Then, as if hearing an angel, Karina huffed, “I’m here.” A rush of air blew past Darius as Karina came to a quick stop at his side. “Kelly will be here soon. We have your back.” When she tossed him the sword he left behind, he snatched it, positioning himself defensively.

Darius couldn’t remember the last time he was this happy to have Karina stand at his side. She stood beside him, not as a child who needed to be taken care of, but as a partner who intended to help a brother in need.

“And I have yours,” he told her, not shifting his focus from Artem.

Darius always believed his life had been a series of endless nightmares brought to life. He realized tonight that he never knew what it truly felt like to live a nightmare. Because nothing in his past came close to being as horrifying as this.

My worst nightmare, now a reality.

“I have to say,” Artem began, pompous as anything, “I am quite pleased to see you, Karina. Now I can kill both you irritable pests in one shot. This will save me quite a bit of time, and the people back homearewaiting for me.” Somehow, Darius seriously doubted that.

Then, a gut curdling scream shook the forest. It was so loud, so horrifying, that all the creatures of the night flew into the sky, escaping whatever terrible being would cause such a sweet voice to shriek so excruciatingly.

Struck with a terror unlike any other, an invisible weight pressed down on Darius’ chest, crushing him until he lost his ability to breathe.

Eva’s screams didn’t tell him she was in danger. They told him she was inpain.

Chapter Fifty-Three

Darius Fischer

Darius clenched his sword, his eyes narrowing in Artem’s direction. “When I kill you, I’ll be sure to do it slowly.” Darius spoke through gritted teeth. He didn’t mean what he said.Ifhe was capable of defeating Artem in battle, which he seriously doubted, he would make it fast. The faster Artem died, the faster Darius could run in the direction of those screams.

In the direction of Eva.

She’s dying,he thought, realizing her prediction was becoming a reality, just as she said it would. My worst nightmare has come true.

Artem outstretched his arms, giving Darius a wider target to hit, which alarmed Darius. Artem was intelligent. He wasnotcocky. If he was this confident about defeating Darius tonight, that meant he would. “You can sure try,” Artem said in a berating tone. “I’ll let you have the first swing. How does that sound?” He wastoyingwith Darius.

“If a slow death is what you want to give him, leave that to me.” Kelly appeared at Darius’ side. “Let’s show this fucker that we aren’t playing games.”

Before Darius had the chance to acknowledge her, she was already raising her hand before her, swirls of blue light intricately twisting around it.

She struck him with magic before anyone knew what was happening. Not even Artem could predict what transpired next.

Artem roared up to the stars a moment before collapsing onto the ground, his body contorting as he uncontrollably thrashed around on the grass. It was as if he lost his mind, his chilling howls never ending. The sight playing out in front of Darius was unsettling, though he had absolutely no idea what was going on.

Beside Darius, Kelly continued to twist her hand in the air, swirls of light dancing around it. Whatever was happening to Artem, Kelly was doing it.

“She’s the sorceress of pain,” Karina must have noticed the confusion in Darius’ eyes. “She can make anyone feel unbearable pain for as long as she wants.”

Darius gave one quick nod, acknowledging what Karina told him. He made a note to never upset Kelly. That was one hell of a power.

Now that Artem was neutralized - in the worst way one could be neutralized - Darius twisted on his feet, prepared to charge in the direction of Eva’s screams.
