But that was when he realized he could only hear Artem’s screams. Wherever Eva was, she had gone quiet.

Fear seized Darius. Hearing silence was worse than hearing shrieking. It turned him cold, petrifying him.

“What have you done!”A woman shouted.

Darius swung his head toward the sound of the voice. It was Hella, and she was staring at her convulsing friend with revulsion.

As soon as Darius noticed what she carried in her arms -whoshe carried in her arms - it took every ounce of strength he had to keep himself from breaking down.

A nearly unrecognizable lifeless body laid in Hella’s arms, its head slumped over. The body had been burned so badly it was barely distinguishable.

But Darius knew exactly who that was. It was Eva.

Vile built up in his throat and he couldn’t stop himself from vomiting, unable to accept the sight in front of him.

She can’t be dead. No. She can’t be, he desperately thought to himself. Perhaps if he repeated it enough, time would reverse, the nightmare ending. She can’t be.

When Hella redirected her attention from Artem to them, her glowing eyes fuming with hatred, she released her hold on Eva. Time seemed to slow as Darius watched her motionless body fall to the cold ground with a thud. She didn’t react. She’s dead.Darius wasn’t sure if he could comprehend the scene that played in front of him. “Oops,” Hella cackled.

“You soulless wench.” Darius ground his teeth together.

Her left lip curled upward. “Oh darling, you havenoidea.” She lifted her hands, a scorching ball of fire building between them. Her focus was set on Kelly. Darius immediately realized she was attempting to free Artem from the hell he was currently trapped in by stopping Kelly. But as long as Kelly continued casting her spell on Artem, Darius and Karina only had to fight against Hella.

Which meant they couldn’t allow Hella to hurt Kelly.

While Hella was distracted, Darius charged at her with a raised sword. At the last second she noticed Darius approaching and tried redirecting her magic in his direction, but she was too late.

He sliced clear through one of her wrists, momentarily extinguishing the fire she had created. He noted that she didn’t react to her hand being chopped off. She didn’t even scream.

Masochist.

Darius slid to a stop, turning to face her and lifting his sword again. She was grinning in his direction. It didn’t look like she felt any pain. “Nothing that won’t grow back.” She winked. Technically, she was right. Unless beheaded or hurt beyond repair, an immortal was able to regenerate body parts.

Regardless, they still felt pain when said body parts were chopped off! This woman was insane!

“I’m not done yet,” Darius growled.

She laughed, “You act as if I’m done with you, pet. Let’s have some fun.”

He wouldn’t allow her confidence to play with his mind like Artem’s did. There was a chance Eva could recover. But the longer he spent fighting Hella and not tending to Eva, the more her chances at survival lessened.

That wasifshe still had any chance at survival.

Darius raced forward, but Hella retaliated by doing something he couldn’t have expected. She pressed a firm hand in his direction, triggering a strong gust of wind to rush toward him. The force of the wind was so powerful it tossed him off his feet and sent him flying back until his body was pressed flat against a tree, trapping him there as if he was glued. It didn’t matter how much effort he put into breaking free. He was indisputably trapped and at this sorceress’ mercy.

“Are you surprised about the wind?” She laughed as she sauntered toward him. “They call me the elemental sorceress for a reason. To think I heard you were one of the world’s greatest warriors. What foolish rumors.”

She strut forward with absolute confidence. Thankfully, unlike Artem, shewasn’tsmart.

Darius tried not to smile as he watched his sister approach her from behind. Hella was showcasing what happened to those who had confidence but lacked humility.

Karina pounced on the woman, wrapping her arms around the sorceress’ neck, causing her attention to break, and the wind spell she was weaving to falter.

Those who lacked humility made mistakes.Fly too close to the sun and your wings will burn,Darius thought as the strong gusts of wind that held him back settled into nothing.

But before Darius could get his footing, Hella overpowered Karina, tossing her to the ground. Darius wasn’t able to comprehend what was happening quickly enough. One moment Karina was besting Hella, the next Hella stood over Karina with a ball of fire in her hand.

Hella was too close to Karina. There was no way Karina would be able to dodge the fire that was about to be tossed her way.
