If looks could kill, we’d go to battle. I silently wage a war as he disappears.

I turn to Scarlett and take her hand. “Let’s get it to go.”

She only nods.

Silence fills the coffee shop as I collect our coffees and food, guiding Scarlett to the door. I’m pretty sure I just ruined my day with Scarlett, but I’d put Chaz in his place again and again.

“Have a good day, Dickasso,” Chaz calls from the dumpster as we pass by.

Scarlett squeezes my hand. “Just ignore him. He’s not worth it.”

“But you are,” I say, glowering at the asshole.

“Please. You don’t need to challenge him. He knows he’ll never have a chance. I’m yours.” Scarlett eases into my side.

Her closeness gives me the strength to let the bullshit go. Because she’s right. Nothing has ever been clearer.

Unwanted Attention

I’vebeenanxiousallnight, thinking about the art gig at Beach Brew but also about how intensely Leo reacted toward Chaz. He had every right to be upset; I didn’t know how to handle the situation either, especially because we need to stay out of anyone’s attention, and I know this is another thing we need to discuss.

If only I could’ve skipped class and slept in.

“I’ll see you all next week. Mr. Deeds, Ms. Alabaster, and Ms. Carlisle. Please see me before you go.” Jonah strides from his podium and to his desk, plopping down.

I’ve tried my best not to stare at him the entire time, despite wanting to. I know it’d be more obvious if he returned my gaze, because he’d find it hard to resist, so I didn’t want to test him.

A shadow falls over me, and I stiffen, the scent of Chaz’s deodorant reminding me of the bathroom spray my dads use to freshen the toilet. It’s not exactly something I want intruding on my senses. “Hey, Dickasso. Want a ride to Beach Brew?”

“Please, stop calling me that,” I murmur, focusing my attention on gathering my belongings.

“But it fits you. Your dad was super uptight. I’d think he’d appreciate someone like me as your friend. It could save him a trip. Beach Brew is on my way home.” Chaz doesn’t move from his spot, blocking me in my desk. “You can tell him as much. It was a bit extreme for him to demand I lose some shifts.”

I open my mouth to respond, but Jonah calls my name.

“Mr. Broderik, is there something you need? I’d like to get out of here soon, and I need to speak to Miss Carlisle about her essay.” Jonah straightens his back, towering a few inches above Chaz.

“Sorry, sir.” He turns toward me. “My offer stands. I don’t mind waiting.”

I shake my head. “Maybe some other time. Thanks, though.” I want so badly to be rude to him, but his attention already is terrible enough. I’d hate to know what it would be like if he was even more of a jerk.

“Suit yourself. Maybe Daddy will loosen the reins when he realizes that he can’t take care of you forever.” Chaz slides past Jonah, tensing as Jonah refuses to move.

Neither of us says anything as Chaz leaves the classroom, swinging the door all the way open, so it takes a moment to close.

“You wanted to see me, Professor Hart?” I ask, tilting my gaze up to him with a smile.

Jonah leans down and presses his lips to mine, kissing me passionately, his body pushing mine into my desk. “I’ve been thinking about doing this all through class. Why must you torture me by denying me your attention?”

I laugh in exasperation and pat his chest, getting him to inch back. “I was trying to be a good girl and help you stay in professor mode.”

“You’re so thoughtful yet infuriating.” Jonah kisses me again, sitting me up on my desk as he positions himself between my legs, rubbing his hand over my cheek and down my throat. He scents me, desperate to rub away the suppressant lotion I continue to wear.

“And you’re a tease, claiming you won’t touch me until I’m out of your class, yet you demand I stay after to torture me with kisses.” I bite my lip with my words, smiling.
