I twist my body and elbow the fucker in his gut, breaking free of his hold. I gasp, intaking a sharp breath. The son of a bitch is going to get fucked up. I’m going to drag his ass out of here and beat the shit out of him. No one fucks with us.

“Ez—” Scarlett’s panicked voice cuts off, striking me in the heart. I spin around, finding a pinprick of light coming from a sensor that sets off one of the fake ghouls that pop out of the wall.

“Scarlett! Scarlett!” I yell, searching the darkness for her silhouette.

She doesn’t respond.

Fuck.

Something blankets over my head, and I realize my cape now twists around me. I catch the unfamiliar scent of the alpha again and this time throw my entire body forward, crashing into whoever gets in my path. I don’t know what the fuck is going on, but I’m not going to let anyone hurt Scarlett.

I manage to pull my hand free of the fabric and punch something soft. A grunt hums in my ear, and I hear the scrape of someone pulling himself up to his feet.

“Scarlett?” I ask, raising my voice. “Scarlett, say something.” My phone must’ve fallen out of my pocket at some point, because it’s no longer there, so I can’t use my flashlight. I smack my hands against the wall, searching around for anything that might light up.

The lights flicker on again, messing with my vision. I spot a shadow against the wall and then Scarlett whimpers.

I rush in her direction, spotting an old potato sack pulled over her head as she bends over, trying to get it off, but it’s tangled with her ivy crown.

“Shit, Scarlett. Are you hurt? What happened?” My heart beats out of whack, my emotions getting the best of me.

“I—I’m okay. I tripped and hit the wall. It sent me into a different room. I couldn’t find you. Then one of the monsters pushed me back, and I hit something. I don’t know. A bunch of shit came down from the ceiling.” Scarlett heaves a couple of deep breaths, clutching onto herself. “Are you okay? I didn’t mean to scare you.”

I try to process her words, looking in the direction that she came from. It’s a hidden door. Maybe going to the back where the actors move around.

“No one touched you, right? No one tried to hit you or kick you out of here?” I don’t want to freak her out more than she already is, but whatever alpha asshole I was in here with was doing more than being a monster. He was out to get me. To fuck with me because of Scarlett and her order. I know it. It’s because she’s going into heat soon.

“Only to guide me back to this room. I didn’t say anything either. I couldn’t see much.” Scarlett ruffles her fingers through her hair, combing out the curly strands with her fingers, trying to fix the mess from the potato sack. “Why? Did something happen?”

I pull her closer and follow the glowing red light now visible through some curtains. “Nothing serious. I think one of the monsters got out of hand. I’m fine, though.”

My biggest question is wondering if it was intentional. It’s dark, and maybe the monster was really just messing with me. All they did was throw my cape around. Maybe it was me who choked myself. Maybe I hurt him without a real good reason.

I push the thought away. The incident has me feeling uneasy, and I want nothing more than to get out of this haunted house.

“I’m a bit over this haunted house.” Scarlett moves closer, her body pressing against mine as she slides her arms around my neck. “Carry me the rest of the way? You promised if I got scared, you would.”

I lift her up and let her wrap her legs around me, my body relaxing now that she’s in my arms again. I manage to navigate the rest of the haunted house without any problem.

An attendant greets us at the exit, wearing a full mask and hooded costume. I catch his familiar scent and bristle, my anger getting the best of me. It’s the asshole from inside.

“Sir? Did you drop your phone?” A voice sounds from behind me, and I spot another actor wearing bloody bandages and face paint.

I swivel to look at the masked and hooded alpha, but he strides back into the haunted house. What the actual fuck?

“Oh, that is your phone, Ezra. You must’ve dropped it when...thank you,” Scarlett says, holding her hand out to the beta. “It was hard navigating in there. The lights kept going out completely.”

The beta frowns. “Oh, thanks for letting me know. That wasn’t supposed to happen. It’s a safety hazard.”

I clench my jaw, my instincts right. “You’re welcome. Have a good night.”

I set Scarlett on her feet and look at my phone, my whole body rippling with tension through my muscles. I study the photo, left on the screen, showing me pressing Scarlett into the wall. It’s too dark to make out anything, but it’s proof that we were being watched.

The fucking sicko.

“What’s wrong, Ezra? You’re tense,” Scarlett says, stroking her hand over my bicep.

“Let’s go find the others. Someone was messing with us in the haunted house. I want to get a list of who works here.” I tuck my phone away without showing her the picture, not wanting her to get upset and freaked out where I can’t properly comfort her.
