“Our lawyer says we must submit all our paperwork and stand before Pack Carlisle next week to plead our case. They’ve requested we send Scarlett early.” Adrian crosses his arms over his chest. “Scarlett denied them herself and informed them that they’d have to arrest her, but Pack Clearwater stands firmly on our side for now. They will not use their resources to aid the Steeles.”
Thank the fucking fates. At least our good standing is useful for something. I’m sure Adrian had to pull a helluva lot of strings like I have. Right now, no one will come within a mile of Scarlett and risk scandal.
“What about Chaz? Have the authorities located him?” I ask, swiveling in my chair.
“No. He was last seen leaving the territory with three other alphas. Two of them were the football players. The third one was unknown and most likely not a member of our territory. They have a summons for their appearance in front of Pack Clearwater.” Adrian purses his lips, crinkling his forehead. “I wish I had better news on that front. As long as he’s not attacking us, they won’t do anything. Worthless.”
“Things need to change,” I say, smoothing my fingers over my cropped hair.
Adrian steps forward and squeezes my shoulder. “I know. We have to focus on getting through this hurdle first. At least we’ll have time to find out for sure if Scarlett is pregnant. It’ll be more reliable if she waits a couple more days.”
“It’s just a confirmation. I know she’s pregnant. I can feel it deep in my soul. It kills me that she has to deal with this when it should be the happiest time of her life. Of all our lives.” I hang my head, staring at the floor.
Adrian kneels beside me and then embraces me, comforting me in a way he hasn’t done or needed to do in a while.
“Keep that up, and you’re going to make me jealous.” Scarlett’s soft voice hums through the air.
I chuckle and hold out one of my arms. “There’s plenty of room right here between us, Lettie. Did you have fun shopping with Jonah? Did you find anything you liked?”
Scarlett holds up a garment bag. “I can’t wait for you all to see it. Jonah was a bit annoyed that I didn’t let him take a peek, but I thought it was only fair that you all had to wait until tomorrow.”
A smile brightens her face, her cheeks flushing with the thought. We were planning a summer wedding, but things have changed.
And everything is set for tomorrow.
Excitement buzzes through me, melting away the negative feelings arising from talking to Adrian about Chaz and Pack Carlisle.
I can’t possibly be worried when Scarlett slides onto my lap, presses her lips to mine, and fills me with all her love in a single kiss. Adrian wraps his arms around both of us, sandwiching us together, and I laugh and inhale a soft breath of her cherry-vanilla scent.
“One of the many reasons why I love you. You always know how to make us feel special. I could never be jealous of any of our pack mates because of it. My beautiful bride,” Adrian says, kissing her temple. “I’m sure your dress is stunning.”
“Enchanting,” I say, kissing her other temple.
She giggles and shifts on my lap, setting off my body in a way that makes her hum.
“And this is one of the billions of reasons why I love you. I could survive on your affection forever. Actually, I plan on it, my grooms. Tomorrow will be one of the happiest days of my life. All because of you.” Scarlett rests her head on mine, closing her eyes as if she’s daydreaming about it.
I kiss her again. “And you. We’re happy because of you.”
