“This must end here. You cannot go on carrying the blessing that has been gifted to you if you are going to waste everything.” Meri opens her wings and flaps them hard enough to send me sprawling forward. I land on my hands and knees, my body aching at the force.

She kicks me in the side, stealing my breath away. I flip over and meet her angry face.

Summoning a sword, she aims it at me, preparing to smite me with her heavenly wrath. The devils can’t get to me. Neither can Elias and Cassius as they remain frozen in the other world.

“May Heaven have mercy on your soul.” Meri swings her sword, aiming for my throat. I squeeze my eyes shut and lift my hands up protectively. “It’s time to go where you belong.”

A chain materializes between my hands, stopping the blade from cutting into me. It clinks against the power, and Meri wails in agony. Fire crawls up her arm, forcing her to drop her heavenly sword.

I push through the pain and anguish coursing through me and get to my feet, straightening my back. I will not stand down. I will serve justice.

“You will burn in the pits for this.” I unwind the fire chain and lash it at her, the power of Hell slowing her and dragging her to me. “I’m not an abomination. You are. You claim to fight for Heaven, but you fight for no one but yourself.”

“You will not win. The Higher Power will not stand for this behavior. It will see to it that you never get Purgatory. Things will return as they should.” Meri’s eyes flash with light a second before fire bellows from her body, stealing away everything angelic about her.

I punch my fist hard into her sternum, knocking her off her feet. She screams as the light and dark swirl from my body and tangle around her, locking her in place. She grabs at the ground, calling to the Almighty to save her.

But it’s over.

She will never see Heaven again.

A blade materializes in my hand, and I stab it through her heart, penetrating the ground. The world rumbles as a Hell portal opens, and Meri falls into it and disappears into the fiery pits.

I gasp at the pain of sending an angel to Hell, and my energy zaps away from me, sending me to my knees.

Silence greets me. The fighting between the angels and devils stops. Turning my head, I stare at the angelic army as they gawk at me in horror.

Kase and Dante take advantage of their distraction and cut off the closest angel’s wings.

“Fall back!” Mikail shouts, spinning and trying to fight the devils with his sword. But he’s not trying to end them here. He’s making room for himself to launch into the air.

I stare up at the strange cloudy sky as the angels circle above me.

“Raven!” Elias shouts, his voice booming through the air as he and Cassius’s world merges with ours.

But it’s too late. I can’t move. I can’t fight. The devils can’t reach me either.

Mikail nosedives, blasting me with his heavenly light as he aims his sword at my being. The sharp point of the blade slices right through my chest. I can’t even scream with the pain and torture. All I can do is stare up at the shadows of wings. At the light.

“Your life ends here. Your soul is mine. Heaven has won.” Mikail rips his sword from my body, touches his hand to my chest, and steals the light from me.

My body gives out, and darkness claims me.

Chapter 28

RAVEN

Dearly Departed

“IT’S A MIRACLE.” Cassius’s voice hums in my ears. “This shouldn’t be possible.”

“Which is further proof that this is how it’s supposed to be.” A hot hand touches my chest with Lucian’s words. Burning pain scorches me, but I can’t open my eyes.

“Give her another bite, Dante. She’s coming around.” Kase’s voice projects to me the same as the others, beckoning me to stay with him. Where exactly? I have no idea.

My sense of existence is thrown off. It’s as if I’m nothing and everything at once. But there are no veils here. I don’t feel the heat of Hell or the weird tranquility of Heaven. If I’m with my devils, that means that I’m not with the guardians. What the hell happened?

Open your damn eyes. Open them now. Hurry the fuck up. You can do it, Raven. Do it now.
