HAYLEY

Ruby Bloody Vixen

“YOU LOOK HOT tonight. The crowd is going to be anxious for a taste.” Opal smacks me on my ass, getting me to move from my spot. “Maybe Master Alexander won’t be such a dick after the show. It’s a packed house and quite the excited crowd. I knew the new choreography would bring more people in. You’ve been doing great. Keep up the sexy work. They love you.”

I force my lips to smile, trying not to react to the beautiful vampire in charge of dolling me up for tonight’s performance. While Opal doesn’t get under my skin like some of the others, she was the one to suggest a change in the show. But I can’t expect much from the one who is in charge of all of the performers and the show. She’s been my caretaker for as long as I can remember and only wants what’s best for the club.

“Of course they do. I haven’t met a vampire who doesn’t appreciate some skin. You would think the assholes have never seen boobs.” Mya yanks off her pastel purple wig and drops it onto the costume counter a few feet away. She bounces her naked boobs with her hands, laughing as Opal shakes her head. “And they sure love yours, Hayley. Listen to them. They’re already chanting your name. Give them a show they won’t forget.”

I inhale a deep breath and flick my gaze toward the wall mirror one more time. Glitter sparkles across my eyelids and lips, and I look like my posters plastered around the casino floor. I can appreciate all the work Opal put into my costume, all rhinestones and tulle. At least I like the way I look.

“You’re up, my gem,” Opal says. “Hustle.”

Music thumps through the air, and I follow Opal as she leads me up the stairs and to the huge platform hidden above the audience. I can’t make out anything but shadows and rainbow light, but it’s better this way. It makes obeying Opal that much easier when she directs me to position myself on the aerial ring she’ll lower closer to the stage.

The music lowers in volume as Alexander Aris enters the stage below me. He wears a glittery, gaudy suit jacket that sparkles in the rainbow lights. Two men roll out a bed behind him at vampire speed, and I concentrate on keeping my nerves under control. The bed was the worst addition to the performance. I prefer my aerial routine over the floor routine, especially with how unexpectedly creative Alexander can be as the emcee. He’s a perv on purpose, though he’s never touched any of us. Opal would never allow it. But as for the vampires in the audience? They get what they can pay for to an extent. Alexander will happily let them bite me anywhere they please. It’s the whole gimmick.

Glancing up, Alexander winks at me, ensuring I’m ready. I blow him a kiss and smile in response. I just want to get tonight over with.

I should be used to this, putting on an exciting show in Vampire Nights as I’ve been on stage since hitting eighteen. This club is the hottest main attraction in La Vega, bringing in patrons from all over. This isn’t the first choreography change, but it seems like soon I’ll just be dropped on stage naked one of these days and offered to table one as a meal.

According to Alexander, no other hotel compares, which is why we must stay on top. I wouldn’t know for sure, because I’ve never left the Aris Hotel property. For one, I’m not allowed. And two? It’s not like I want to. I can see the nightlife from my room window, and I wouldn’t make it a few feet without being bitten or worse. It’s why I don’t complain about having to perform for the hungry and rowdy vampire patrons. If this gives me protection from getting thrown on the Blood Strip, then I’ll do what I have to do. It’s not like blood donors can make lives for themselves anyway. I’m better off than most. I know what the room service staff deals with being alone, and unlike me, they don’t have the same protection.

“Thank you, Vampire Nights and La Vega!” Alexander shouts, taking a short bow like the audience is here for him alone. I missed his short dance number he likes to do to make the crowd anxious. He knows no one is here for him, which is why he pushes boundaries. Whatever Alexander Aris wants, he gets. He’s one of the leaders of La Vega as far as I know. What he says goes. He is the law. “How are you all enjoying the show? Weren’t my precious Crystal and Emerald simply magnificent? Their bodies and blood are just...mmm.” Snapping his teeth, he grabs his junk and humps his hand.

Hoots and hollers fill the air and screeching wolf-whistles sting my ears. Opal whispers something into her old headset and the lights dim except for the bright spotlight on the middle of the rolling bed.

“We have something special for you all tonight, but I’m going to need a little help from one of you lucky assholes. You see, my beautiful baby doll is a bit nervous that none of you want a taste of her exquisite blood,” Alexander continues, goading the crowd for a response. “So, I’m ready to prove the sexy-smexy, smokin’ hot Ruby Vixen wrong.”

The crowd cheers again, and I clutch tightly onto the ring. If I fall, I’ll break my leg or something. Harnesses aren’t allowed, because Alexander thinks that we deserve whatever pain comes with failures. And falling? I just better not.

“I’m going to need a volunteer. Someone tall. Strong. Someone filthy fucking rich, because my Ruby’s blood is far more superior than anything you’ve ever tasted. She’s never had a bite before, so you’ll also get to sink your teeth into her sweet, virgin flesh. How does that sound? Who wants to show her how much fun it is to be tasted by someone worthy?”

“Fucking stupid,” I mutter under my breath. This is probably the only time I can speak my mind, high above the stage and surrounded by music loud enough to stop any vampires from hearing. They can pick up on the softest whisper. A heartbeat. Sometimes, I even think they can read minds, though Opal denies it. I don’t know the vast capabilities of a vampire, but I do know that they’re powerful, especially when hungry.

The crowd goes absolutely wild, more so than last night, and I clench my teeth, putting on my stage smile. My cheeks will be sore later, but if I dare break my performance and show how awful I feel...I can’t think about it. The pain isn’t worth it. The crowd needs to believe I want them. They want me to beg for their attention.

“Ruby, Ruby, Ruby!” Alexander chants, raising his hands above his head. The crowd chants along with him, and the music changes to alert me of the start of my routine.

I reposition myself, sliding my butt off the hoop until I catch my knees and hang upside down. My turquoise wig billows like a cascading waterfall but stays in place. The rhinestones sparkle on my bodice and thong bottoms, and I swing up and lock my hands to the ring, using it to flip and spread my legs into the splits. Flexibility is a turn-on for vampires. I’m sure they’re all fucking and biting me in their heads, wishing this was more than a soon-to-be topless performance.

“Baby doll, I don’t think these fine patrons want a taste of La Vega’s most stunning and delectable woman,” Alexander says from below, faking the dumbest frown with his fat lip popped out as he blinks dramatically. “Perhaps you should just exit the stage.”

“Fuck no!” a deep voice shouts. “I want a taste. You’re gorgeous, Ruby! Sexy! I want to sink more than my fangs into that supple body. Give us a peek of your juicy pussy!”

Alexander feigns shock, covering his mouth. “Now, now. Is that a way to treat my exquisite baby doll? If you really want a delightful performance of your fantasies, prove it with more than your words. Show her she’s worth the cost.”

The vampire growls and flips off Alexander. “Fucking impossible.”

“Not my problem if you’re unworthy. Go to The Pala and play with their donors. It might suit you better.” Alexander waves his hand at the guy as security drags him back, stopping him from retaliating. It wouldn’t be the first time someone tried. Alexander doesn’t play games or make exceptions in the price he keeps for the back row vampires to drink from me on stage. Releasing a dramatic sigh, he glances up at me. “Go on, baby doll. These gentlemen can’t see how exceptional you are. We might as well just cancel the rest of the show.”

The crowd groans and growls, vocalizing their displeasure.

I swing back up and climb onto the hoop, sitting sideways and using the strength of my glutes to keep me in place. “Oh, no! Please, Master Aris. There must be something I can do. I’ve been waiting all of my life for the perfect vampire to bite me.” I project my voice, ignoring another male vampire calling my name, vying for my attention. “I can’t be a bite-virgin forever. Please, master, please!” The crowd devours my begging as if they can taste my blood. It’s a silly part of the act, considering I’ve been bitten over a thousand times at least, but whatever plays into their desires.

“What do you think?” Alexander asks, lifting a brow as he searches over the audience. “Should we let her try to convince you?”

The crowd roars and cheers, calling my stage name. Playing Ruby Vixen gets me through the torture of what’s about to come—probably some asshole who dry humps me at vampire speed while sucking on either my ass, thigh, or boob. I’ve never had anyone choose anywhere else. Because of this, I shut down and think about what kind of meal Opal will have the donor staff prepare to celebrate another successful night while my persona Ruby Vixen moans and screams in pleasure, ensuring our guests come back for me.
