“You don’t need to intervene, Savage.” Killer uses Cooper’s stage name. He did mention that some of the performers stay in their personas all the time. It’s kind of like some of the gems back at Vampire Nights. Almost all of them kept their stage names.

“Fine. You don’t want your hand, then I don’t give a fuck.” Cooper heaves a breath and turns away from Sawyer and Killer. She really does stay true to her name.

Killer huffs and thrashes, getting Sawyer to release her. He remains guarded and aims his weapon at her. Monroe unholsters his gun, drawing her attention to him. I think she finally realizes she’s outnumbered and overpowered. This is not the stage.

She adjusts her sparkly top and searches the room, narrowing her eyes on me. “Get your little servants under control, or we’re going to have a big fucking problem, donor. I was told I couldn’t kill you but don’t think I won’t make you wish you were dead.”

What the hell am I getting into? The only thing keeping me calm is the fact that I know Sawyer will be with me. I also know that I’m capable of summoning strength if I’m freaked out enough, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be fucking strong during the fight.

“Oh, fuck no. You’re not threatening my girl.” Monroe aims and fires his gun without warning, shooting Killer in her stomach. The scent of her blood smacks me like a shockwave, and Knox snatches me before I tackle the woman and really test my ability to fight against someone who isn’t afraid to hurt me. It’s one thing to practice with Monroe and Cooper. It’s a completely different story to face a raging bitch of a vampire who has taken on fighting as her entire existence.

I shouldn’t feel sad for her, but I do. Just a bit. I don’t know what kind of situation she was in before. If she has a background like Cooper, I know things aren’t good for her.

“Damn it, you asshole! You ruined my costume!” Killer tugs at her crop top and stares at the bloody holes. Her attention goes from annoyance to worry. She gives me whiplash with her change in demeanor. “I can’t go on stage like this. Tonight’s match is supposed to be packed. I need to look amazing.”

Monroe raises an eyebrow, shifting his attention to Sawyer and Knox. He doesn’t know how to handle the situation either. I’m sure he expected the woman to try to fight him instead of complaining about her wardrobe. I guess the vampire entertainers aren’t that different from donors, because Mya has complained about costume malfunctions as well. So have I.

Someone taps on the door, and I take an automatic step back as Lawrence fills the doorframe and bangs a cane to the tile floor. He searches the room, assessing the situation. From the sounds of other voices in the hallway, I wonder if someone called him to interrupt us.

Killer pouts her bottom lip, looking sad as hell as she faces Lawrence. She’s a far better actress than I realize. I can already tell that she’s going to blame everything on us.

“Master, look at my costume. You didn’t tell me I had to prepare myself for these assholes. That one shot me. I didn’t even do anything.” Killer shifts her gaze and motions at Monroe. “He shouldn’t even be in here. This room is for performers only, and he said he’s not participating.”

Lawrence remains expressionless to her comment, continuing to tap his cane on the ground. I can’t take my eyes away from it, imagining that he probably hits donors with it like Mr. Pala had.

“If you don’t get her in control, we’re going to have a far bigger problem than her acting as if she’s innocent. We weren’t aware this dressing room wasn’t private. It was in our agreement.” Sawyer steps forward, his bulging muscles even more defined because he only wears a speedo. Even with so few clothes on, he’s intimidating as fuck. And sexy. The thought of him wrestling anyone like that prods at my deep-seated jealousy. I already want to attack Killer, and the fight hasn’t even begun.

Lawrence sighs. “Always with the dramatics, Kassandra.” Turning to Killer, he adds, “Leave it for the stage. If you can’t handle the consequences of your actions, perhaps being one of my fighters isn’t for you. I told you things were going to evolve around here. We finally have the opportunity to bring in more patrons than before. More patrons means more blood. It means better facilities. More time away from the herd for you. You should thank me because of how thoughtful I am, thinking about you.”

I expect the woman to open her mouth and argue, but she bows her head.

Staring at the floor, she says, “Thank you, master. I’m sorry. You know how I get before going into the ring. I must be in the right mindset to make sure the show is unforgettable. Please punish me for my actions as a reminder.”

I gawk at her as she bends over and touches her toes, shaking her ass at Lawrence. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone ask for a punishment like this, and I’m nearly certain she’s only doing it because it gets her off and not because she feels she deserves it. And from the look on Lawrence’s face...gross.

Swinging his cane, he whacks Killer hard on her ass, knocking her to her hands and knees. I cover my mouth in surprise, trying to hide my shock.

Lawrence smiles with enjoyment, just as sadistic as Alexander, and he steps closer to Killer and holds out his hand to her. “That’s my good fighter, Kassandra. Now, why don’t you gather the donors and head to the stage? You’re up first tonight.”

“First? But—” Killer snaps her mouth shut and drops her gaze to the floor again.

Lawrence ignores her and turns to Sawyer. “I’ve decided I want Hayley to fight against Kassandra without you. You may stand by, but I have something far more entertaining for your portion.”

Sawyer clenches his fingers into fists. “She’s not ready. We had a deal that it would just be me tonight with her riling up the crowd.”

Flaring his nostrils, Lawrence crosses the space to Sawyer. “It’s my show. Get used to it. I find things are better when they’re unexpected. Which is only a test for tonight. I need to ensure you will follow through. We have a meeting with Alexander coming up, so if you expect me to participate instead of ending this deal and keeping Hayley for myself, you must obey. If you have a problem, then you can—”

“What if we do a tag team, and I partner with Hayley?” Cooper asks, keeping his distance. “Killer can have a donor as well. It could be interesting.”

Lawrence shifts his gaze to Cooper, silently staring at him for a minute in consideration. I expect him to deny him. I expect him to do something crazy like smack him upside the head with his cane. What I don’t expect is for him to nod his agreement. “I think that is a marvelous idea. But I want Hayley to kill the donor.”

My heart sinks in my stomach. “What?”

“You got it, master. It’ll be an excellent show.” Cooper frowns with his words, flicking his gaze to me.

Lawrence smiles, his eyes flashing silver. “I’m sure it will be. Good luck, everyone. I’ll see you all on stage.”
