What am I even thinking?

His sharp mouth softens, and he smirks, meeting my gaze from over Davian’s shoulder. How can I even get pissed off at him? He treats Davian far gentler than any other alpha would.

“Davian, take a breath. You’re being overwhelmed by her emotions. You need to practice control. Acting out like this will only get you hurt if you were to face another threat. Do you understand? I’m here to help Eliana. I want nothing more than to protect her as much as you do.” Slater doesn’t break his eyes from mine, and I’m nearly certain that he’s including me in his comment.

“Why? What’s in it for you?” Davian thrashes.

“It is my duty, not only to protect the bloodline my grandfather fought to protect but also because I can’t turn away from someone in need. Including you. We do things differently in Ice Meadow. You have to trust me.” Searching my gaze, Slater tightens his jaw. Warmth travels from him to me, getting to my being.

But how can I trust him? It hasn’t been long, and all of my experiences with the wolfpacks of Shadow Moon Island have been pretty shitty.

“Now, if I release you, will you control yourself? Don’t think I won’t carry your ass back to the cabin.” Slater’s jaw twitches as he gives Davian a little shake since he doesn’t respond. “That goes for both of you, Eliana. Don’t think I can’t handle such a task. I have two arms.”

Damn him. Now all I can think about is his arms around me and carrying me through the snow and right into the hot shower. And with the image of the shower, comes a wave of lust crashing through me. I can feel his lips on mine, even though it’s just a memory. It’s so intense.

“Ahh! What the fuck, man?” Davian jerks his elbow, striking Slater in the ribs. He releases him, and Davian falls forward, hitting the ground on his knees.

And now I see why. It looks like Slater couldn’t control his cock, and Davian felt his hard-on for me. Great. This is just what I need—a bunch of guys unable to control their desire for me. I have to do something. Anything.

Closing my eyes, I give into my wolf, letting her take control of me. Maybe if I’m furry, they’ll be less likely to want to fuck my brains out.

“Doubtful,” Slater says telepathically, closing the distance between us.

Davian jumps to his feet, trying to get between us again, but Tristan surprises me by snatching my wolf body up. I squirm and thrash, wanting to be on the ground. My inner beast hates being restrained.

Slater sighs and scrubs his hands over his face. “Eliana, please.”

I growl at him.

“Just let her go. She’s not going to comply.” Grabbing my snout, Slater turns my head toward him, his gray eyes flashing gold. “If this is that important to you, then fine. I can’t protect you if you don’t want me to.”

Tristan sets me on my paws. “Slater, what about—”

A wolf collides into Tristan, snarling and biting onto his arm.

Slater bursts into his wolf form, changing so quickly that I miss it. Whipping his head in my direction, he barks. “Stay by my side. Twilight Cove is closing in again. They’re not alone. They’re here with Crystalrock.”

Shit. Shit. Shit.

Slater nudges his head into my side. “Run.”

Except I can’t. My wolf refuses to move. My hackles rise on end, sticking straight up on my back. I’m tired of running.

I’m ready to fight.

“Damn it, pup. Move! Now’s not the time to challenge me. Head toward the hill. We need to lure them to the edge.” Slater shoves me harder with his body, barking. “Stay close but separate. Don’t confront anyone. Just run.”

I don’t have a choice but to get my paws to move as Slater herds me toward a clearing, forcing me away from my guys. Tristan encourages Davian to hurry and change, but I don’t see if he does or not. I can’t look behind me at all. My body kicks into action, and my wolf senses take over. I finally stop resisting Slater and make a run for it. He barks again, praising me in my mind as he remains by my side and keeps my pace, so I know he’s faster. His legs are longer too.

“Pick it up, pup. I know you can run faster than this. We’re going to need to dodge past the Twilight Cove betaborne. I can smell him from here. He’s going to try to surprise attack us. He’ll go after me first, so once you see him, go right. There is a path too narrow for the both of us to quickly follow, but I know a shortcut to work around. I’ll catch up. Got it?” Excitement fills me, radiating from Slater. He loves the idea of baiting these wolves.

Suddenly, so do I.

“Head right. Don’t stop. Got it.” I push harder on my paws, using the mixture of emotions coursing through me to keep me going. My fear melts away completely. I search the world in front of me, inhaling the cold air to pick up the strange, feral scents of the other pack.

I catch a whiff of something familiar, and my heart skips a beat. It’s Adam. He’s been through here.

“Focus, pup. Concentrate on the foul scent of our enemies. He’s close.” Slater rubs his body alongside mine.
