My paws slip on the rock floor, and I miss biting Rocco’s throat and instead latch my teeth to his leg. He snarls and bites my ear. Pain swells through me, but I don’t release him. There’s no fucking way I’m going to let him go now. If I do, he will try to kill me. I need to hold on for a little while longer. The pain will be worth it.

Rocco jumps up, trying to shake me from his leg. I clench my jaw tighter. His leg buckles under the strength of my bite, and his bone crunches between my teeth. Blood floods my mouth as he screeches in his wolf form. Satisfaction simmers beneath my skin. My wolf craves his death. I need to taste more of his blood and flesh.

I release his leg and whip my head up, jerking my mouth toward his throat. He snarls and bucks, latching onto the side of my neck, chewing on my scruff. He doesn’t get my skin, but he stops me from sinking my teeth into him.

“I’ll kill you,” I think to him, fighting against his attempt to keep me away. “You’ll not harm any more people.”

“We could’ve had a good life, you bitch. You fucked up everything and turned a part of my pack against me. You’ll be the one to take your last breath here. No one will stop me. You’ve seen how the council handles things. Now if you submit, I’ll be quick. But if you fight, you’ll wish you were already dead.” Rocco jerks his body and spins around, throwing himself sideways to roll and knock me off.

Fuck. I can’t believe I let him go.

I snap my teeth, backing up until I hit against another glass partition. “Stay back.”

Rocco ignores me and launches from the ground at me. I fall to my belly and try to move out of his way, but he twists and lands on top of me, sinking his teeth into the back of my neck. Pain ignites like a blazing fire down my spine, and he shakes his whole body, making my mind whirl. The edges of my vision shadow, and I stop fighting. I have to give in. He’s going to kill me otherwise. If I stop and play to his alpha nature, I might have a fighting chance.

Where the fuck is Ravi? Slater? Someone, anyone. But no one intervenes. No one saves the day.

“No one will get through the barrier put in place. I’ve been given permission to do as I please from an ally on Starrise.” Rocco jerks me into the glass partition, cracking it.

I hit the ground on my side and curl in on myself, transforming into a human. My wolf can’t stand giving in and giving up. I have to face this in the form I know best. I will not die as an animal.

“Hurry up, Serena. No one should’ve been able to intercept. He’ll kill one of the only females available to help the packs.” This comes from Josiah, the vampire man. “It’ll weaken us.”

“If you hadn’t agreed with Dawn, none of this would’ve happened. You know that our authority gets threatened. Of course, someone manage to get to one of the packs. No wonder we’ve been having such issues with Shadow Moon. Now keep the wolves away from me. I will break the magic.” A flash of light fills my vision, stealing away the frothy jowls of Rocco as he bites me again and again. “Hang on, Eliana. We will get you out.”

But I don’t think she will.

Slater and Ravi growl and smash into the shield. Sloan joins them, trying to break through whatever the fuck is happening that keeps me and Rocco separated from everyone else. I guess the packs are not only enemies to each other. It looks like the council has enemies of their own, and I got caught in the crossfire.

“Someone speak to her. If you want to save the she-wolf, you need to get her to her feet. She’s given up.” Serena’s words pound in my mind, surprising me. I hate her in my head. I don’t know what she’s talking about. I haven’t given up. I’ve just...I know I’ve lost. “I’ve cracked the magic enough that you can talk to her. Help her fight. Show her that you are worthy of her.”

Fiery agony licks across my side, and I watch as my blood drifts across the floor. It covers Rocco’s snout, and he finally stops biting me only to give me a once-over as a human.

“Transform back into your wolf. Do it now.” Rocco shoves his big head into my side and tries to flip me onto my back. I don’t budge, trying to put as much of my weight on the floor as possible. There’s no fucking way I’ll change for him either. “Transform!”

I ignore him, clutching my knees to my chest, doing my best to stay curled in on myself to protect my belly.

“Eliana, go for his fucking junk. I don’t care what you have to do, but it will knock him down in his wolf form just the same. Once he loses focus, go for his eyes. Blind him. Do you understand? You need to fight strategically. He overpowers you with his size. You’re smart. Use what you know.” Ravi’s words nudge at my wolf, awakening my beast from the dark depths of my soul.

But still, I don’t transform.

I will fight as a human. I’ll die as one too.

“Eliana, listen to him. You have to fight. I can’t lose you. I’ll die beside you.” Kellan’s words surprise me, the sudden wave of emotions kicking me into action.

I open my eyes, catching sight of Rocco as he jerks his head down, going for my side again. I roll out of the way and swing my leg up, kicking him in the stomach hard enough to make his wolf-self yelp. And then I kick him again and again, doing my best to try to get him in the most sensitive spots. He snaps his teeth at me, turning from my body to my face.

I take advantage of his position and jam my thumbs into his eyes. His body ripples with his screech, his voice deepening as he transforms back into a man to fight me off. He thought he was most powerful as a wolf, but he’s nothing. He can’t win. I won’t let him. My guys need me.

My children need me. I can’t give up. If I give up...I can’t even think about it.

Rocco locks his big hands around my wrists and squeezes, trying to break my hold. I jerk my head forward and headbutt him in the nose, sending stars peppering my vision. But it’s enough. He falls back, clutching his face, and I crawl toward him and swing my fist, punching him right in his flaccid dick. I want him to pay. I want him to never hurt another human again. He’ll never hurt me again.

My body shudders as I free my wolf, and a growl reverberates to my very being. Pushing my back legs from the ground, I launch at Rocco in his human form and land on top of him. He’s too slow to push me away, and I managed to sink my teeth into his neck, biting down hard enough to cut off his airway.

Something shatters, and electric light flashes through the air. The world quakes. Hands lock around me, but I still don’t let go. I’m going to kill the bastard.

“Princess, you have to let go. You have to let one of us do the honors. If you don’t, things will only get worse with the alphas.” Ravi tries to rip me away again.
