“By abandoning it?” I ask, spreading my legs wider.

My words set her off, and she screams, swinging her sword at me. I try to strike her stomach, but she dodges and spins out of the way. The once scared, broken-winged angel turns into a flurry of spitfire and strength, her actions screaming warrior. She lunges at me, aiming at my leg, not a kill shot but to take me down. This fallen angel is more of a skilled fighter than I’m used to, but she can’t overpower me. I’m born for this. I’ll fight until the day I ascend to Heaven and reap my reward for serving humanity.

Metal strikes metal, the fight between River and the demon as violent as ever. Their swords clash, and River yells. The pitch of his voice distracts me, and I instinctively turn to see what’s going on. I shouldn’t have done that. It gives the fallen angel the chance she needs to take me down. I brace for the swipe of her blade, but it doesn’t come. Instead, she punches me right in the kidney. I fall to the ground and heave a breath. Standing over me, she aims her sword at my neck.

Glowering into my eyes, she says, “Please, don’t make me do this. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

I don’t get a chance to respond. My brother yells, and heat swells through the room. River charges the demon, his precise aim seconds away from a kill shot.

“Stop!” The beautiful fallen angel shifts her weight, watching as River jerks his arm back to jab his blade.

Her call gives me the opening I need to knock her off me.

She screams again, punching me right in the jaw. “No! I need his help!” With her desperation, she shoots fire from her hands, engulfing River. But it doesn’t incinerate him. It merely stops him in his tracks, leaving him butt-ass naked with his clothing smoldering at his feet.

Sitting up, all I can do is gape at River. He stands frozen, shell-shocked, and unable to process what just happened.

The demon barks a laugh, his voice rumbling through the air. “Hell, yeah, Riella. That’s what I’m talking about. You’re my hero.”

No one responds or moves. The fallen angel, Riella, gawks from her hands then at River in shock. I’m not sure if she reacts because of her fire hands or seeing my brother in all his naked splendor. I don’t want to brag, but since we’re identical, I know just how blessed he is.

And since he’s not a pile of smoldering flesh on this dirty apartment’s floor, he knows he’s just as blessed too.

Riella

Oh,Heaven.WhathaveI done? How?

A dozen thoughts swirl through my mind as I stand staring at the naked hunter on the floor. Steam wafts from his skin, and intricate designs decorate every inch of his muscular arms. Another inked symbol marks his chest above his heart, the cross stunning with its ornate design. Within it lies a protection symbol, which would explain why the sudden hellfire exploding from my hands didn’t burn him alive. Only his clothes.

I can’t seem to turn my gaze away from his body. It’s as if I’m seeing a naked man for the first time, though it’s my second one today. He’s built as sturdy as Damien and just as perfect. I turn my attention to the other hunter, created in his identical image, and I wonder if more than just their faces are the same.

I need to snap out of it. But for some reason, I’m not able to.

“Damn, angel. That was one hell of a blast. If you wanted to see some cock again, I would’ve gladly shown you.” Damien steps over the hunter as if he’s not even there, returning to my side and taking my hand.

I let him tug me a couple of feet, only looking at the hunters from over my shoulder. It’s now that I realize something strange is happening with the other one. Storm. I recall the naked hunter yelling his name out several times. Storm. I repeat it again in my mind. The name suits him as he came thundering into my life, nearly destroying everything in his path.

“Riella, come on. I know you’re confused and in shock, but we have to go. Those assholes will only be stunned for a second. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to end up in another damn Hell cage.” Damien squeezes my fingers once more, drawing my attention back to him.

He’s right. We have to go.

Something snatches one of my wings, sending searing pain through me. I scream and spin, knocking the naked hunter away. He swipes his blade, trying to stab at anything in front of him,at least his aim is terrible. Annoyance rushes through me, I jerk my foot and kick him in the groin. Gasping, the hunter clutches himself, his face turning red.

Damien snorts with a laugh, a sound unexpected coming from a demon. A demon I saved. I hope I don’t regret it. Something just felt right deep inside me. He doesn’t act like the demons I imagined facing on my mission. I expected to come down here and see demons in their Hell forms, destroying everything good in their path. This particular one has a sacred symbol on his wall and dozens of books that surely contain imaginings from humanity. And he wants to help me. He claims to be benevolent. I just hope I’m not a fool. I just never thought I’d be facing all this alone. I never wanted to do this all alone.

The hunter doesn’t stay down long, pushing to his feet. Damien growls, the noise deep and guttural and animalistic, sending goosebumps prickling over my skin. He summons his weapon and prepares to fight the hunter, protecting me.

“Wait, River. You have to stop. Don’t hurt her.” Storm rises to his feet. He’s breathing heavily as his strange humanly malfunction seems to end as he gathers his senses. One look at him, his body shimmering like heavenly wings for a split second, reveals to me that he might’ve seen something I can’t. I’ve heard of humans with gifts from Heaven. I’ve just never seen it for myself. It draws me to him, knowing he’s been blessed by the Almighty. I can’t help it; I need to feel close to my home again.

“Then I’ll hurt him,” the other hunter, River, says. He shakes his shoulders and looks ready to fight Damien.

I summon my heavenly sword and step between the two of them, narrowing my eyes. “You will not hurt anyone. Listen to your blessed replica. He seems to have far better sense and reason than you do.” I keep my blade trained on him, proving that I’m not joking.

A hot hand grasps my shoulder. “Look at that. I have my own personal guardian angel now. Well, a fallen angel guardian. I prefer it this way. You don’t burn me when I touch you, which means...”
