I sigh deeply and run my fingers through my hair, trying to calm myself. “Okay, but whose side is she on? And why doesn’t she realize she chose to fall? Does she really believe she’s doing the Almighty’s work by falling? She must be playing us somehow.”

Storm studies me for a moment, my concern reflected in his eyes. “Look, all I know is what the vision showed me, and we’ve never been led astray. I saw where we are supposed to take them. I say we head there now. Call the other hunters in the area and have them meet us at this location.” He takes out his phone and shoots me a text.

I message the location to the other hunters, sending them ahead to scout the area. These are good men and women, and I know I can trust them implicitly, unlike our two unwanted companions.

Marching over to them, I leer at them in disgust. Okay, so maybe not the angel...er...fallen angel. I don’t think there is a man on this planet that could. Her doe eyes and pouty mouth still have the beauty I imagine a celestial being to have. And her body? Damn. I shudder. I can’t afford to think of her that way. She’s what we were born to kill. She’s nothing more than a job. She can never be anything else. Even if all I can do is think of staring longingly into those violet eyes and kissing those perfectly full pink lips.

Crossing my arms over my chest, I glare at them and say, “This is how it’s going to go. For some reason, my brother thinks we need you, at least for now. We’re going to a safe house of our choosing, and you’ll do everything I say. Is that clear? If you fall out of line even once, make no mistake. I will end you. Now let’s go.”

Damien salutes me and says, “Sir, yes sir.” All while smirking like he just won the lottery. I take a glance at the beautiful fallen angel as she just stands there looking at the ground. I almost believe her story and feel sorry for her...almost.

We meet my brother, and he leads the way to our old beater car, and we make our way to the safe house. Because I sent the other local hunters ahead, there should be thirteen beside us. That should be enough to protect the place, at least for a little while, so we can figure things out.

“What a shithole.” Damien leans between the seats, motioning at the farmhouse. It looks like it’s seen better days, but at least it offers us protection from the other demons. If only it could keep this asshole away.

Several cars remain parked around the place, and I recognize most of them. Storm scouts slightly ahead but still stays close to us.

An icy feeling trails over me the closer we get to the door. It’s the same sensation I get facing a threat. Something is wrong. Fucking horribly wrong.

Rushing to the door, I ignore my brother calling my name. I can’t stop myself. Even as my brain tells me I need to stop and be smart about it, my body carries me inside. I’ve never felt like this before. Whatever has happened must be horrid.

I step inside and swear to Heaven, Hell, and the Universe. I can’t believe what lies before me. The bodies of our hunter allies have been arranged in a circle. Blood spatters across the walls and pools across the floor with streaks crossing toward a hallway. It looks like it’s being ushered to the basement.

Demons have ravaged the place, the summoning circle, unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

My soul screams.

This place will soon open for all of Hell.

Call to Heaven

Riella

“Getback.Wecan’tgo in there.” River slams the door, blocking our view of the safe house. “I need to call backup.”

“Backup? Our backup should be here,” Storm says, grimacing around at the driveway full of vehicles. He tries to shove past his brother to get inside, but River charges him, knocking him back. He crashes into Damien, and the three of them hit the grass. I take a step forward toward the door, but it heats beneath my fingers, preventing me from opening it.

Hugging myself, I glance from my wrestling companions and to the curtained window. I try to see in, but there isn’t even a crack in the fabric.

“What do you think? Should we leave them? They obviously have issues that they need to work out.” Damien materializes beside me again, dusting his hands on his pants.

“It’s not our place to enter without them. This is a hunter’s house. We must wait for them.” I turn back toward the lawn and watch as Storm pins River only to have River knock him off to get on top.

I blink a few times. “Just tell us what you saw, and we can assess the situation.” I try to get my racing heart under control. It’s one of those things that I learned from my training in Heaven. We can’t always predict what happens, but we can control how we react to it. Right now? I need to be strong. I know that things are changing, and my purpose is blurring and crumbling before me, but that doesn’t change who I am and why I have joined the hunters, including Damien. He has also abandoned his path from Hell. He alone is proof that we can have some sort of control over things. I need to figure out this mess and learn how to work through it.

“It’s…” River shudders and pushes against his brother, getting to his feet. “Just get away from the door and let us handle it.”

I stare at the old house in silence, trying to figure out why he reacts so strongly and aggressively. There must be something terrible behind the door. The area around this place is abandoned as if something cleared it of all humans. They were supposed to bring me somewhere safe. They were supposed to bring me somewhere blossoming with the holiness of Heaven. But I don’t feel any of that here, and the sudden fight between the brothers proves as much. The safe house doesn’t feel like somewhere we should be at all.

But it doesn’t matter. I can’t enter to see things for myself until I can get the twins to settle down.

Storm and River huddle close together, whispering words I can’t hear. The two of them look toward me and Damien and then back at each other.

“If you don’t trust us, then say so. This is wasting all of our time.” Damien cracks his knuckles and remains close to my side. “I need to take Riella somewhere off the grid so no one can find her while we figure out all the bullshit with her superior.”

Storm combs his fingers through his hair and strolls closer to me. “Maybe you can try to connect to Heaven like you wanted. My brother is going to need some time to get things together.”
