“I have fallen.” It’s not an answer to his question but the only thing I can get my mouth to say. “How could I have been wrongly misguided?” My voice hums, sounding robotic as the words truly sink in. I fell from grace.

My whole being weeps at the thought. How could this have happened? How could Adriel have forsaken me? He was supposed to be here. Something must’ve happened. He wouldn’t have done this...yet why do I believe it?

“Fuck, angel tears,” Damien mutters, holding me out as if my tears might splash him.

I blink my eyes and intake a soft breath. There isn’t time for tears. I need answers. These hunters came crashing into my life just as I crashed to Earth, and maybe it was divine intervention. Maybe Heaven realizes its mistake. Maybe...

I thrash in Damien’s arms, getting him to release me. “You can help me. You have a connection to Heaven.” I practically tackle Storm, pushing him away from his brother. Damien gets between the suspicious twin and me and Storm, stopping him from trying to pull us apart.

I cup Storm’s cheeks and peer into his vibrant emerald eyes. “I need you to take me somewhere sacred. We can use your gift to contact my superior. We can get the answers we need. We can make this work, and work together. Please.”

Storm studies me in silence for a long moment, each of his breaths like the ticking of a clock. Time feels as if it slows around us. I try to open up to him, hoping that he can sense my purpose.

He swallows and licks his bottom lip, the gesture drawing my attention. A surprising tingling sensation builds in my core the longer we stare at each other. His presence attracts me the same way Damien’s had, and I can’t stop from pressing flush against him, needing to feel more of him.

Leaning closer, he hovers a few inches away, lost in my gaze like I am his. “We must go to a safe house first. This is far too many demons in one location. We’re going to need help. Can you do that? Help me?”

I bob my head and offer him a smile. “It is my duty. It is why I’m here.”

He frowns at my words as if he doesn’t believe them. “I hope you’re right.”

His comment stabs at me, and I straighten my shoulders and take a step back. I don’t need hope. I have faith. I know why I am here. To fight.

I won’t let humanity down.

I will prove it.

These hunters will see.

Safe Passage

River

“Keepup, assholes.Youfall behind, you become a lowlife demon’s bitch.” The demon wags his eyebrows at me, pissing me off.

After taking care of most of the demons chasing us, we now follow our demon mark carrying the fallen angel. Miles seem to pass, and I’m not sure what in the hell is going on in my brother’s head right now. He better have a good reason for not destroying these two abominations. His visions aren’t usually so vague.

I glance over at him as he stops, bending over to grasp his knees. It takes nearly everything in me not to kick his ass to keep him moving, but I’m not in the mood to let the demon think he’s in charge.

“Yo, bastard demon!” I yell, waving my hands over my head. I grind my teeth, forcing out the next words I can’t believe I’m saying. “Stop and come back. We need a plan and to find a safe place to regroup. We had a deal.”

The demon circles back, ignoring the woman punching him in the back from his shoulder, yelling for him to put her down. He smirks at me, truly enjoying that I can’t kill him...yet. “You know we have to ensure we’re not followed. Also, you mentioned a safe house but have yet to provide a location. We can’t remain still and wait, dumbass. Do you have somewhere in mind we can go, Creek? Or should I find us one? Oh, and the name’s Damien, not demon, but you are welcome to call me Your Majesty.”

I clutch my blessed blade, imagining gutting him for fucking with my name.

“Damien, it’s River.” The girl looks at me, sadness filling her ethereal violet eyes. “And I’m not a demon...but I’m no longer an angel either. I guess I’m a fallen angel now.” She says it like it changes anything.

I watch her as she tangles her hands together, and I snort at her comment. “Yeah, well that tends to happen when you abandon Heaven. You only have yourself to blame. But don’t worry. You won’t have to live with that regret for long. Now stay here. I need to speak to my brother.”

I turn and close the space to Storm before I let them in on anything. I drag his ass further away, not caring he might be in the middle of another vision. He usually can work even when his mind wanders, and now I’m freaked. To say I don’t trust this situation, or these abominations is a vast understatement.

Flicking Storm in the middle of his forehead, I say, “What the hell, man? Get it together. We had a plan and a demon to kill. The next thing I know you see a nice piece of ass and we’re now working with them? What. The. Actual. Fuck?”

Yeah, I’m beyond pissed, but I know my brother and he wouldn’t keep demons alive if he didn’t have a good reason. I just wish he’d explain his damn visions.

Waiting for an answer, I glance back at our unwanted company. Storm clears his throat, and I focus on his stoic face as he finally says, “I had a feeling come over me right before she almost fell into the crack to Hell. When I touched her, she triggered a vision. It was unlike any I’ve ever had. It almost felt like it came straight from the Almighty. I can’t explain everything I saw. I’m still trying to sort it out, but I know she’s the key to everything that’s happening.”
