Riella

“Ah,feelsjustlikehome.” Dagan spins around the living area, grinning like a psychotic maniac.

Storm and River stand near the hallway, keeping space between them.

“You can sleep on the rug right there. Riella’s deal said you could stay in the firehouse, but you didn’t make any other specific stipulations. We have opened the wards only to this area. You can use the bathroom, the kitchen, and sleep on the floor. I don’t want your smelly ass on the couch. I can smell the scent of Hell on you from here.” River smirks with his words, his satisfaction over using everything to his benefit clear on his face.

Dagan shrugs his shoulders. “That is acceptable for me. It’ll be quite thrilling to fuck my queen right in the middle of this room for all of you to watch and envy.”

Swinging my hand, I punch him in the shoulder hard enough to make him stumble. He manages to stay composed, his smile still lighting his face. I don’t want him to constantly instigate a fight. It’s already hard enough as it is.

“What the fuck ever. It’ll be more exciting watching her drive that dagger through your chest. Now, you have a bargain to uphold. You’re here and we have given you a place to stay. Answer Riella’s questions.” Damien steps closer, not showing any fear toward Dagan. He wraps his arm around my waist and glides his fingers up and down my side and showing off the fact that we are together.

That’s enough to make Dagan react and scowl. He’s going to learn real quick that whatever shit he pulls, my guys can beat him.

“All she has to do is ask. I’ll give her an answer every day I’m here to ensure the longevity of my stay. I quite like it on the earth plane.” Dagan steps closer to me, surprising both Damien and me as he drapes his arm over my shoulders, pulling me against him. I turn into the meat of a daemonic sandwich, my wings spreading out as my body goes out of whack. What in the actual Heaven? Why am I so excited? It’s as if the longer I’m around Dagan, the stronger my attraction grows.

“Only one question a day? No. You promised me answers. I need to get in contact with Adriel. He’s the one to arrange this deal with you. I need answers. It goes against everything he’s ever told me. He’s betrayed me. You need to get him to show himself.” Anger rises through me at the thought. He purposely pushed me, and not to join the war on Earth. Adriel deceived me to send me here so Dagan could take me as a bride. My soul screams at just the thought. Not because of Dagan, but because of Adriel. He is no heavenly being. Archangels wouldn’t do something like that. He is the watcher of humanity, but I can now see something dark in his actions. I will not stand for it. I will not be used.

Dagan tilts his head, giving me a long once-over, taking extra care to drink in the sight of my breasts through my shirt. “There are ways you could speed up the process. How about another kiss, and I will summon him?”

Damien growls and releases me only to shove Dagan. “You will not manipulate her to get affection. That’s not how this is going to work. You will earn that affection, and only if she’s willing to give it to you.”

Storm and River unsheathe their blades, finally striding forward.

“This isn’t worth it. He’s not going to take advantage of Riella and her desperation.” River bares his teeth, chanting a spell, making the room quake.

Dagan sighs and raises his hands in surrender. “Settle down, little hunters. I was only suggesting something that I know Riella enjoys. You guys are thinking too much into it. You guys can’t seem to understand that Riella and I...we are made for each other. She is intended to be my queen. There’s nothing you can do about it except to prolong the wait, but I’m a patient man.”

I open and close my mouth, trying to gather my thoughts. I would have kissed him because he’s right. There’s a dark part of me that craves to be close. I crave his power, and I want to use it to our advantage. It’s the strangest, most exhilarating thing. But I’m afraid to admit it out loud. I’m afraid to see what would surely be looks of disgust crossing my guys’ faces. I know how they feel about Dagan, and I won’t push them. They’re right. He needs to earn my affection. He cannot take it in exchange for things. He can offer and hope that he earns it.

“Enough!” I put distance between us, helping clear my head. Gathering hellfire in my palm, I narrow my eyes on Dagan. “Do as I ask. You can contact Adriel. So do it. I want a meeting with him. Do you understand? I need to know everything.”

Dagan flexes his jaw, grinding his teeth. “Fine, my warrior. Be prepared, though. You will not like what you hear. There are powerful things happening that are out of your control.”

Why does he sound so protective in this moment?

“You see, Riella. I’ve made the deal because Hell needs a new king. Lucifer’s plan to take the mortal plane will only devastate the Universe. We will lose Hell if he does, but he doesn’t care about punishing mortals. He only cares about taking down Heaven.” Dagan remains even-toned, his admission surprising me. “I made the deal with Adriel because he will help me. He despises the direction humanity turns and believes they need the punishment I can give so they can repent and grow.”

“Oh.” It’s all I can say. I don’t know how to feel or think. It goes against everything I’ve ever known as an angel for Adriel to work with a demon to give Hell power.

“Don’t look so shocked,” he adds. “I’m not doing this to go against humanity. I’m here for the separation of planes. For power and punishment. It’s everything you agree on. You want to fight Hell to protect humanity. Adriel just wants it to burn.”

My heart shatters at the thought. The treachery runs far deeper than I realized. Adriel must face consequences for his actions. He is no longer humanity’s caretaker. He is a minion of Hell. And it’s time he falls.

Dagan offers me his arm, guiding me down the long alley and deeper into a demonic run section of the city. My boots thud against the wet asphalt, the scent of rain overpowered by the smell of garbage and something grosser. The scent of lower-level demons.

“This is the only place between the worlds that has access as the veil here is the thinnest.” Dagan touches the small of my back, keeping me moving forward despite my urge to freeze.

I look around and catch sight of Damien, Storm, and River taking their places, ready and on watch in case something goes down and Dagan lies about any of this.

I smile weakly at Damien, my heart fluttering as his demonic facade flashes, his very being attracted to the darkness of Hell radiating from every inch of this alley.

“You better not betray us. I will not just shove my blade into your chest. I will ensure you feel my wrath for the rest of eternity.” I keep my tone low and deep, my voice stronger than ever as I realize just how unwavering my convictions are.

“You’re my queen. We have a deal, and I will not go against it. I want you to want me. You crave my power, and I don’t want you hating me for the rest of eternity. I know it’s hard to grasp, but you’re the most spectacular being I have ever laid eyes on.” Dagan is so charming that my cheeks flush at his words.
