I thin my lips, rubbing them together, choosing not to respond to his compliment. It’ll leave me open to more, and he tests me enough as it is. And maybe that’s what his job in my eternity is. Testing me for the sake of the Almighty, so I can continue to prove my loyalty to the heavenly fight despite having these black wings and hellfire.

Dagan chuckles and bumps his shoulder to mine. “It’s okay to like me. It’s not like you’re going to fall to Hell, my warrior. It’s too late for that. You’ve already been forsaken. Why don’t you just accept the power?”

“Because I’ll find my grace again,” I snap, my anger flaring and stealing away the butterflies from my stomach.

“I would love for you to prove me wrong. Show me just how truly incredible you are. Starting now. We’re here. You’ll have five minutes.” Dagan stops in place, summoning hellfire to burn a symbol across the metal of a door to the building. His power eats away at the door, shifting the doorway into a portal unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Shadows and light dance before me, the summoning spell opening something strangely familiar. I can feel Heaven. It awakens something inside me, stealing my breath away. I take an automatic step back in fear, my body repelled by the air in front of me. Tears prickle my eyes, but I don’t cry. How can I feel so bad being so close to the place I love?

But then I realize why.

Adriel appears in front of me, his handsome face remaining even as he drinks me in from head to foot before turning his gaze to Dagan.

“What is going on?” Adriel bellows, his features twisting with his anger.

Dagan growls and snatches me by the waist yanking me back. I stumble and summon my heavenly sword, my fear getting the best of me. Adriel surprises us by stepping through the portal, a new darkness crossing his features that I’ve never seen.

“You have betrayed me, Dagan,” Adriel bares his teeth, fire licking over his skin.

Oh, Heaven. Heaven, help us.

“Lucifer—” Dagan’s words cut off as a wave of fire crashes over him, breaking us apart.

My heart thrashes in my rib cage as Adriel—no, as Lucifer sets his eyes on me. I had no idea that Adriel was Lucifer’s twin.

And things start to make sense.

I don’t have a chance to think about it, because Lucifer gathers power and snarls, his Hell form breaking free.

I can’t move. I can’t fight.

I brace myself for his attack.

I brace for him to drag me to Hell.

“UnholyfuckingSatan.Putup wards, now!” Damien flashes his demonic form, gathering hellfire to rush from his hiding spot.

Fire erupts in front of him, blocking his path. It devours the alley on both sides, caging in Riella with Dagan and...Lucifer? Fuck me. My brain can barely process the name I heard Dagan call out.

Storm cuts his palm with his dagger, flinging his holy blood at the flames, chanting a spell to fight the fire of Hell with his blessed fire. “Want to tell me just what is going on, Damien?” My brother looks as confused as I do, though it doesn’t stop either of us from getting our shit together.

I glance at Damien, hoping he might clue me in, but his demon form keeps flashing in and out of view. This is bad. Terrible. If what I suspect is true, this is the devil himself. And we’re not exactly as powerful as the ruler of Hell.

“I don’t know. Lucifer shouldn’t be—” Damien flies off his feet as Lucifer shoots hellfire in his direction, breaking through the binding circle to drag him in.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

“How dare you betray me!” Lucifer’s guttural voice booms through the air. “Thinking you could summon my brother. Believing he’d help you steal Hell from me!”

He speaks to Dagan, transforming from an ethereal man and into a monstrous beast fit for Hell.

“You’ve failed to fulfill your purpose, Lucifer. Hell needs a better king, and we’ll fucking be the ones to do it. Now back down!” Dagan grows in height, confronting Lucifer.

Riella’s chest rises and falls, her eyes flicking between them.
