“It was Adriel. Adriel lied to you, Dagan. He wanted this all along.” Riella’s voice trickles through the air.

She might be right.

I look at Damien who is now in his demon form. He can’t help it. I also notice Dagan is in his as well. I guess that’s what happens when you’re in the presence of the King of Hell. The problem with that is, can they be trusted, or will they betray us? I pull out my blessed sword at the same time my brother does. I also notice Damien and Riella do the same. Satan just stands there looking amused.

Lucifer snarls before pulling out a large red trident. It lights up with hellfire, blazing with flames. I’ve never seen such a thing before. The sight of his monstrous beast form shocks me to my core. He morphs unlike I expect, his dragon-like body shining with green scales and fiery wings. His upper body remains the same, but he grows in height and claws protrude from his fingers. His head takes on more of a reptilian feel, yet I can still make out his humanoid features. Two massive golden horns curve up from on top of his head, and his eyes burn like coals set ablaze.

Lucifer smashes his talons into the concrete. “Bow down, my failure of a prince, and beg for forgiveness. If you do, I’ll grant you mercy. If you don’t, I’ll ensure—”

Dagan sneers and wraps a tentacle around the trident, trying to pull it away from him. I move closer to Damien and my brother, pushing into the broken binding circle.

Dagan summons more power, facing Lucifer. “I can’t let you destroy Earth and humanity just so you can exact your revenge on Heaven. I’ll never bow. Your reign is over. You are done!”

For the first time, I hear the sincerity in Dagan’s voice. I actually believe Dagan when he says that he doesn’t want the earth plane destroyed by Lucifer. It confuses the fuck out of me. How is it that I can agree with several demons when they’re not supposed to be on our side? But Riella isn’t technically on Heaven’s side as defined by hunters. And she has proved otherwise. Just because she has fallen from grace means nothing. She just can’t access Heaven. But now we must band together to save Earth. Lucifer is not intended to ever walk here. With his presence, a war will ignite. It’ll bring Heaven and Hell to Earth, destroying everyone in the process. Everything I’ve worked for all my life comes to a head in this very moment.

Summoning my bravery, I slash my heavenly blade across my palm, chanting out a binding spell, hoping to keep Lucifer trapped in this alley.

Heat courses through my body, the fire around us growing. I can’t do anything as Lucifer whips his attention in my direction, snarling in his beast form. Jerking his neck, he snaps his fangs at me and snatches me off my feet with the points of his dagger claws. The ground falls away as he hoists me into the air, his eyes burning like red-hot coals. This is it. I’m no match for Satan himself. He will end me in a second. Everything I’ve done in this world will be forgotten. I will die as a weak hunter who didn’t see past the black and white pages that are supposed to be good and evil.

“No!” Riella yells, her voice ringing through the air. A figure launches beside me, and Riella flaps her wings, wielding her sword. She strikes Lucifer in the hand, her blade slicing across his skin, sending fire spraying toward her. She dodges out of the way, shielding herself with her own power. Her action is enough to get Lucifer to release me, and I holler as I freefall. Riella doesn’t let me splatter against the ground, grabbing me by the hand and slowing me down. Lucifer swings his other hand at us, trying to slice us open. Dagan intervenes, his demon form taking complete control as he locks several tentacles onto Lucifer, yanking him back. Storm takes advantage of his distraction, bolting closer to his enormous body. Jabbing his sword, he stabs Lucifer in the gut, slicing upward to send more molten fire cascading across the alley. Damien pushes him out of the way, allowing Lucifer’s power to ignite him in a glowing mass of fire.

Riella sets me on my feet. “Run! You have to run! He will kill you.”

A part of me knows she’s right. The more dominant part of me knows better than to run from Hell. This is my purpose after all.

Dagan snarls and swings his sword, joining Damien as they attack Lucifer. Riella flies through the air, grabbing Storm from the ground and launching back into the air, up and away from the King of Hell.

She drops him in front of me, her eyes lighting aglow with the fires of Hell as if Lucifer’s presence awakens her demon side, suppressing the beautiful angel I saw before Dagan had stolen her brilliant white wings, turning them dark.

“Leave! Protect yourselves!” Riella spins and shoots her fire at Lucifer. “This is my fight.”

I growl under my breath. “This is our fight, all of us. We’re not leaving.”

“Like hell we aren’t. He’s too strong. We have to go.” Damien shoots fire at Lucifer, giving him the chance to avoid another round of flames.

Dagan snarls and shoves Lucifer into the building wall, trying to push him back through the portal. “I banish you to Hell! You’ll not take this plane.”

Lucifer snarls, any human-like qualities completely gone as his satanic form steals power from Hell, making him impossible to fight. Dagan waivers, Lucifer slicing through one of his tentacles to free him of the prince. He hollers and backs up, avoiding another swing from Lucifer.

Dagan falls to his knees, unable to keep his strength. His ass is about to be sent back to Hell. A part of me knows that this is what should happen. He shouldn’t be on Earth either. But another part of me knows that if he goes back to Hell, Lucifer will come after us next.

Riella opens her wings, launching into the air again. She’s not going to leave until this is over. And there are only two outcomes. Either Lucifer fails, or we do. And I can’t see the latter happen.

Riella strikes Lucifer with her blade, screaming with her strength. Her angelic blade sets aglow, her fire taking control of it, eating away any reminiscence of Heaven.

I shove past Damien and rush forward, attacking Lucifer again. I’ll not leave Riella to fight this on her own. I won’t. It’s in my very soul that I have to do this. I have to fight on Heaven’s behalf. I have to set the world right.

If only Lucifer didn’t swing his claw at me. It slices across my chest, the wound burning my skin. I falter and lose my balance, hitting the ground. I stare with wide eyes as Lucifer smacks Riella from the sky, sending her crashing into a wall. He turns his attention to me, preparing to impale me with his dagger-like claw.

I say a silent prayer. I ask for Heaven to claim me.

Nothing happens to me.

Lucifer screams.

I wasn’t claimed by Heaven but two hands grab ahold of me, dragging me across the ground. “Damn it, you pathetic hunter. It’s time to go.”

I can’t do anything as Dagan drags me to my feet, lifting me up with his strength. The world spins, and I catch sight of Riella grabbing Storm and Damien.
