I scream as Damien falls into the fire, disappearing into the abyss. My heart shatters, igniting liquid anger through me. I swing my hand and punch Lucifer in the jaw, screaming with my fear and anger. This can’t be happening. Damien did not just fall into Hell in an attempt to save us.

“We have to close the portal. There are too many souls escaping!” Storm shouts, his voice ringing in my ears.

“We have to get her out.” River moves in my peripheral vision until his silhouette becomes more clear. “Riella, please. You have to try. We can lock the devil twins in.”

But locking them in the circle won’t imprison them in Hell. There’s only one way to do it.

Lucifer snarls, showing off his demon form...no. It isn’t Lucifer. It’s Adriel. He has managed to fall from grace. His intentions have finally caught up to him, and the Almighty has forsaken him the way he forced me to forsake the Almighty.

And he’s as powerful as ever.

I charge forward, watching as his focus turns to Storm and River. He’s going to break through. I know it. Lucifer’s already weakened it as he tries to grab Dagan.

Summoning hellfire, I shoot it at Adriel and Lucifer, striking each of them in their backs, sending their wings ablaze.

But they don’t stop. Lucifer drags Dagan into the pentagram and knocks him into Hell.

My heart speeds up, the beats threatening to make me breathless. I have to get to Storm and River. I have to shield them from Hell.

Bending my knees, I launch a dozen feet into the air and crash down on top of Adriel. Twisting my hand, I shoot Hell power at Lucifer, breaking his attention away from the hunters.

All it takes is a split second for me to smash my palm against Adriel, shooting him again with my hellfire, cracking the ground beneath us. He hollers as the dark souls grab onto him, dragging him into the pits of Hell. Something hot latches onto my wings, stopping me from falling with him, and I meet Lucifer’s fiery gaze.

“This is your one chance at mercy, fallen angel. Swear your loyalty and I won’t destroy you or the hunters. You can be my liaisons for the mortals.” Lucifer flashes his mouth full of fangs, his voice deep and guttural. “Make the deal.”

I flick my gaze to Storm and River as they mutilate their palms once more. They’re going to seal the pentagram with me and Lucifer in it. They’re going to cut off the portal to Hell.

“No,” I say, manifesting my heavenly blade once more. Jabbing my hand, I strike Lucifer, surprising him. His pride prevents him from seeing that I don’t care about self-preservation. All I care about is getting him back to Hell and closing it off. I care about saving humanity and my hunters.

“Close it! Now!” I shout, lunging at Lucifer to grab onto him.

Storm and River yell a chant, sending the world around crumbling as fire ignites from the pentagram.

Lucifer snarls and jerks his hand, sending a fiery chain toward Storm and River, tangling them up. I scream as the world blurs, and I watch as Storm and River fall forward into the pentagram as their spell seals it with all of us inside.

Lucifer grabs my chin, his wings burning as we both fall, dragging River and Storm with us. Fire and light crash through the air, the light show blurring the world.

This can’t be happening. They were never intended to fall to Hell. They were never intended to sacrifice themselves.

Anger explodes through me, and I spread my black wings, letting the fire and light crashing around me engulf me. Lucifer’s eyes widen, and I grind my teeth as I fold my wings around us, blocking out the world and forcing him to release the chain restraining River and Storm.

“This is for humanity, Lucifer. This is for Heaven and the Almighty. This is for all that is good in the world. You are damned to Hell beside your treacherous brother. You will never return to the mortal plane. I will ensure it myself.” Summoning more fire in my hands, I set Lucifer aglow, the world shifting and moving and blurring around us as my power builds a cage from everything good and evil in the world, light and dark, pure and tainted. I build the cage with my very being, my power whipping through Hell and grabbing the darkest souls to create a metal more impenetrable than anything in existence. Lucifer and I collide into the dark onyx ground, and I swing my fist and punch him away from me, watching as he rolls across the ground only to land beside Adriel.

Fire cascades from my palms and wraps around them, restraining them to the deepest part of Hell, bringing them together once more.

I gasp for breath, my skin tingling as the fire and light consume me next, eating away my very being.

This is over.

Humanity will never have to face such darkness again.

The edges of my vision shadow, and I stare around at the whirlwind of souls dancing among the flames and light unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The veil between worlds binds together, my power sewing and mending the damage caused by the pride of two fallen archangels.

The pain dissipates from my body, and I feel the warmth of love and hope rising inside me. Whatever my fall from grace has stolen now replenishes. I push to my feet and catch sight of my reflection in the glittering veil before me.

Where my black wings once were now glitters with ruby feathers made from both the fire of Hell in the light of Heaven, my power shifting and moving to embody both good and evil as I find the perfect balance for humanity.

I’m their new keeper.
