I glance over my shoulder and find Ollie standing in the doorway, a look of horror and confusion on his face.

“What the fuck is… Oh god.” He groans, one hand covering his eyes and the other covering his mouth. “What the fuck are you two doing?”

Thankfully, Evan has the quick reflexes to pull my shorts back up for me before re-buckling his own belt.

“Oliver,” Evan says. “Let me explain.”

“Dad, what the fuck are you doing here?” Ollie searches my gaze for answers. “Have you been fucking my dad this whole time, Nat?”

Guilt and shame wrap around my throat.

“Ollie, please—”

“You lied to me!” Ollie points a finger at both of us. “I knew something was up. You said you moved back here for me, but I knew there had to be another reason you stuck around.” He spins on his heel, stumbles into the door frame, then runs off down the hall.

I rush after him, pushing past drunk and confused party guests who ask me what’s wrong with Ollie. When I finally I catch up to him, he’s on the beach in front of the neighbor’s house.

“Ollie, stop. Just talk to me.”

“I can’t believe this,” he roars, kicking at the sand. “You and my dad. How could you?”

Tears flow down my cheeks. “I’m sorry—”

“You’re sorry? That’s all you have to say?” He rounds on me, getting in my face. “How long have you been fucking him? Since we moved in? Tell me!”

“We didn’t… Not at first...”

“Oliver,” Evan calls. He jogs up to us, panting. “Please, son. Let’s talk about this.”

“I don’t want to talk to you!” Ollie shouts.

“That’s fine,” Evan says. “Just…don’t blame Natasha. This is my fault. I crossed a line.”

“We both did,” I say. “And I’m so sorry, Ollie. I know I should have told you sooner.”

“It shouldn’t have happened at all, Nat. He’s my dad.” He whirls on Evan. “And she’s my best friend! You justhadto fuck my best friend?”

“We didn’t mean for it to happen.” I take a deep, fortifying breath before I continue. “Evan was the doctor I saw the day when you dropped me off for my appointment. I didn’t know who he was until he showed up at dinner, and I was too embarrassed to say anything.”

Ollie’s expression softens slightly, realization flickering across his features. “He was your doctor?”

“For that one appointment, yes,” I tell him. “Then, before I knew it, we were all moving in together, and things became even more complicated.”

“We tried to fight it,” Evan says. “I tried… But I couldn’t help falling for Natasha.”

My heartbeat stutters. The raw emotion on his handsome face is almost too intense to look at. He’s not just saying the words for Ollie’s sake. He loves me.

“Oliver, you know better than anyone how special she is,” Evan says.

Ollie glares at his father.

“Yeah, I do.” He’s quiet for a long moment, his gaze trained on the black lake. Finally, he turns to me. “I believe you didn’t mean to hurt me, Nat. But now you have to choose. Him or me.”

My throat clenches. “What?”

“I said,” Ollie repeats coldly, “you need to choose. One of us is leaving tonight. You decide who.”

I wrap my arms around my middle, unable to shake the sense that I’ve been backed into a corner. “Ollie, you can’t ask me to do that.”
